Student Workbook
To complete the knowledge and understanding for the criteria of the unit complete the following work book.
1a) culturally and ethically explain appropriate procedures for the following practice when caring for babies or young children.
Skin Care
Use gentle fragrance free cleansers and soap with very young babies cool boiled water alone.
To prevent dry skin apply fair amounts of moisturiser or oils
Personal Hygiene
For children who need to be changed regularly a care plan should be in place especially if they are older, you will need to identify a key worker and when they will need to change the child, it is key that parents are involved with this process so they feel comfortable with it and a part of the child care still.
Hair Care
In care setting staffs don’t tend to get involved with the care of a child’s hair, however there are top tips than can be given to parents.
Washing- wash hair with a mild shampoo that won’t harm their eyes as you shampoo, once children are old enough teach them to shampoo and wash their own hair.
Tangles – detangling is probably best to do before you wash a child’s hair, use a wide tooth comb and start at the bottom and work your way up.
Enjoy children to brush and comb their own hair to get into a good routine.
Oral Hygiene
Encourage all children to brush their teeth after eating food, discuss other time that children should brush their teeth, i.e. first thing and last thing at night.
Nappy Changing
Policies and procedures should be adhered to at all times,
All areas should be antibacterial sprayed before any nappies are changed all staff should wear an apron and gloves to prevent cross infection children should be lifted appropriately to the changing area and all soiled and wet nappies disposed of according to onsite facilities.. (Soiled bin and wet bin)
1b) Demonstrate the above procedures in the work place.
