According to Philip Lau his research paper “The Limitations of Wikipedia” he informs his readers on the disadvantages of using wikipedia as a reliable source for research. Lau analyzes the controversy of using wikipedia as a reliable source. He states how its great for using it as a starting point on any research, however its to be used with great caution. Lau clarifies on how wikipedia is a software that allows people to “collaborate” in adding content. In simpler terms anyone with an account can add, modify, rearrange or delete information on any desired article. Lau also states that many articles consist of opinionated beliefs. Not all entries in the site will be objective for example controversial topics will most likely reflect on both sides of the issue. He goes on to say that anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published and claim to be an expert.Which means that credibility among publishers lack on this site.
This article was a great example of a descriptive essay. He combined his own ideas with quotes and paraphrases from his sources.as well as detailed facts to suport his ideas. For example in page 4 Lau states, “Another problem with wikipedia is the ease with which entries can be easily edited, because the content of wikis can be altered by anyone.”. Lau used the example of the notorious case of john Seigenthaler Sr. “He was a journalist who was falsely accused in a wikipedia entry of being involved in the assassination of John F Kennedy. The false information stayed on the site for four months”
This article was was well stated and made me realize how dangerous using wikipedia as a source can be. I was one of those people that would turn to wikipedia for assistance when I would procrastinate an entire week on an assignment. Aside from risking plagiarism the source might not even be as reliable as well
