Organizational Climate At Wegmans Essay
‘Employees First, Customers Second’

It is hard to be a stand out company in the supermarket industry, but Wegmans seems to have found a way. Wegmans Food Market Incorporation is a major grocery retail chain in the United States. Wegmans is not just a grocery retail chain, it is also an experience. Whenever people shop at Wegmans, customers receive outstanding products and services. Through its exceptional organizational culture, emphasis on human climate, and constant employee development, Wegmans has set itself apart from every other grocery store by simply putting its “employees first, customers second” (George & Regani, 2007, p.3).

The Positive Organizational Climate at Wegmans
Every company has an organizational climate. Organizational climate is “the atmosphere that employees perceive [that] is created in their organizations by practices, procedures, and rewards” (Schneider, Gunnarson & Jolly, 1994, p.18). In 2007, there were 71 different Wegmans locations. As of now they have grown to about 80 stores. According to the owners of Wegmans, they intend to only open new stores at the rate of about three per year. The reason for this strategy is for the company to keep its customer service at the levels they work so hard to strive for. Also, the owners feel that opening stores too fast would diminish their product.     This project sought to compare measures of organizational climate in on-going patient safety studies, identify similarities and setting-specific dimensions, develop a model of climate domains that are hypothesized to affect outcomes across settings, and test aspects of the model. Methods: Investigators who had surveyed health care workers’ perceptions of organizational climate in six studies funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) were invited to participate. Survey items from each study were classified using four climate domains found in a prior literature review. The authors discussed sub constructs, proposed additional constructs, developed an integrative model, and independently tested selected aspects of the model. Results: The investigators who participated had studied acute care, home health care, long-term care, and multiple settings; two investigators had studied primary care. More than 80,000 workers were surveyed. The model’s core climate domains included leadership (e.g., values) and organizational structural characteristics (e.g., communication processes and information technology), the impact of which was mediated by four process variables: supervision, group behaviour (e.g., collaboration), quality emphasis (e.g., patient centeredness), and work design (e.g., staffing). These factors affect health care worker outcomes (e.g., satisfaction and intention to leave) and patient outcomes. Overall, the full model explained 24 to 65 present of the variance in employee satisfaction, but was not as effective at predicting intention to leave. Conclusions: While some of these domains appeared in prior models, new domains—quality emphasis, new sub constructs, information technology, and patient centeredness—are emerging.     After completing the organizational climate questionnaire and scoring an 18.7 puts my organization under the Pattern IV Leadership (enlightened). To be in pattern IV (enlightened), means that leadership delegate’s power to interest and concern for a problem. Freedom is highly expressed to initiate, coordinate, and execute to complete goals. Communication is open, honest, and uncensored and people are treated with trust. All these are examples of what my organization strives for. I have been 2 different groups within my organization and both displayed these examples. Talking to other employees in different groups, they feel the same about their group. Overall the entire organization is following and maintaining a good overall climate. I think that my organization can move up in the scale on all the steps but should focus on reward system and communication. I would like my organization to increase their reward system to show their employees that their work is appreciated and give the employee more of a verbal reward so they know that all the work they did is what was expected. There have been a few cases where I and other employees have discussed that we feel that we are not given that verbal reward and leaves us with questions about whether it was good or bad. This is where communication is needed to be improved. Over all communication is good in the direction and goals within the organization but its lacking in the verbal reward. Would this ever change within my organization? I would think it would but would require the voice of all the employees affected by this. We have a annual leadership/Manager questionnaire that we answer similar questions as the ones that where for this and I feel that not all employees answer these truthfully and just select the highest score.
