Abraham’s covenant with God promised him land and a nation, a kingship and a name, and that his descendants would be a blessing to all nations. In return, Abraham’s descendants would love God and be His people. In the story of Abraham’s covenant with God, two truths, one of undying faithfulness to God and the other pointing to Jesus are illustrated. In his story, Abraham is forever faithful to God. When God promises descendants to the elderly Abraham and his wife, Sarah, Abraham believes God and continues to trust in Him. When God calls Abraham to leave his people and start the Israelite tribe, Abraham listens. Through constantly listening to God and having faith in Him even when His will seems impossible, Abraham is a moral hero who illustrates the obedience and faith all Christians attempt to possess. Additionally, the story of Abraham’s covenant with God points toward Jesus’ death on the cross. At one point in his story, God asks Abraham to sacrifice his only, beloved son to God. Abraham obeys and offers Isaac up to God before God provides Abraham with a sacrificial lamb. This story prefigures Jesus because in it, Isaac, the son of Abraham, is offered as a sacrificial lamb. Similarly, Jesus, the son of God, is offered up as a sacrificial lamb to save us from our sins. In return, God would accept the Israelites as His chosen people, used to reveal Him throughout the world. In the story of his covenant with God, Moses is portrayed as a moral hero who says “yes” to God despite his reservations. Additionally, the story of Moses’ covenant with God prefigures the coming of Christ by preparing the Israelites for the coming of Jesus. In his story, Moses is portrayed as a man who doubts his own ability. When God calls him, Moses is uncertain and tries to evade God. However, eventually, Moses agrees to accept God’s calling for him and in doing so, becomes a moral hero. By saying “Yes” to God, Moses becomes an example of always following God even when He asks for difficult things. Moses’ covenant with God also points us toward Jesus by introducing the ten commandments, which prepare the Israelites for Jesus. By giving Moses and the Israelites a set of laws to help them live out Natural Law, God promises to send a savior because if the people live Natural Law, then they will be ready for Redemption. Therefore, by giving Moses the ten commandments, God prepares His people for a savior and points us toward Jesus.
