Orphan Train Quotes
“…tough and weird is preferable to pathetic and vulnerable…” this came from Vivian in the novel, Orphan Train. This quote made me think of my energetic, quirky dad, Dean Dahlhauser. He is the toughest person I know and he has remained my best friend for as long as I can remember while also making a giant impact on me. My dad is so important to me because he has taught me lessons, taken me on trips I’ll never forget, and he has shown me what it is to be a strong individual. My dad has taught me lessons about different topics, but I will narrow it down to the notable ones. When I turned 4 years old my dad started teaching me how to play baseball. We would stay outside every night from the last snow to the first snow and play catch until it …show more content…
Whenever it is just the two of us our plans go awry. If it becomes a family trip, it goes exactly to plan. I know that I am supposed to have multiple examples but this one is my absolute favorite and it is so long that I am just doing the one. Once my dad and I went to the Twins game and on our way there the sky started turning black. We contemplated turning around, but instead we thought we could make it through. Within minutes the rain became coming down so hard that we could not see a foot in front of us. The windshield wipers were moving so fast that one of them ended up breaking and hanging over the side mirror. We were basically screwed without it, even though we were only driving 10 mph. We had to drive out of our way to a Ford dealership hoping that they could help us on a Saturday afternoon. They were extremely nice and fixed the wiper then sent us on our way. We arrived at the game just in time for an hour long rain delay from the storm we had just driven through. We waited it out to watch the Twins lose to the Tigers 5-2 like usual. It was a paper bag moment just like the 2016 season, but that’s what you sign up for as a Twins fan. When someone asked me for a scholarship about my best day ever, I quickly wrote about this day because it was a day with my dad I will always remember. There are no other experiences that come close to this day. My dad and I always embark on

The message of life or a theme the book, “The Maze Runner” is trying to convey is to never give up and persevere. In the book, Thomas thinks, “If Newt and the others hadn’t been able to solve the maze after two years of searching, it seemed impossible there could actually be a solution. The fact that the Gladers hadn’t given up said more about these people then anything else,” This quote tells the readers that even after 2 years The Gladers never gave up and kept on trying to solve the maze no matter how pointless it looked. Another example of perseverance is when Thomas is stuck in the maze with Minho and Alby overnight. Though all the Gladers said there was no chance of surviving in the maze in the night, Thomas did not give up and is able…

The theme of dominance is used in The Girl on the Train to portray the male characters’ abusiveness and control over their spouses. As a manipulative individual and a good liar, Tom is the prime example of this theme. Tom takes advantage of his ex-wife’s blackouts and lies to her about hitting him with a “golf club,” leaving “hole in the plaster” (261). Accordingly, Tom makes Rachel feel sorry for everything, and he tells her, “you’ve no one to blame but yourself” (299). Furthermore, there is Scott, who exerts dominance over his wife, Megan.…

Social interaction is an essential part of any relationship; it is the determining factor for one’s perceptions of the society around them and their own identity. Relationships are initially built upon mutual interests and acceptance and this is closely linked with one’s innate desire to be able to affiliate with a group or another individual. Both these ideas are explored in the ‘Namesake’ by Jhumpa Lahiri and the picture book: ‘The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan. Lahiri explores the importance of shared values and experiences in a relationship for it to prosper rather than the need for social interaction. This notion is shown through the relationship Ashoke and Ashima forge throughout their life. Despite having an arranged marriage, without having…

One weekend, seven of us decided to take a trip down from college to my parents' beach cottage in Panama City [Florida]. We were three guys and four girls celebrating our last weekend before beginning our sophomore year. We unloaded the cars and prepared for bed. I did not know then, but it was the last decent night's sleep I would have. We got up the next morning, loaded the cooler with beer and headed for the beach. We laughed, drank and exchanged stories from our freshman year. After finishing an enormous meal, we continued to drink and dance until 1:00 a.m. We had to get back to school early the next day, so we decided to fill the car with gas and get more cigarettes that night. My friend and I hopped in his truck, me in the driver's seat and he in the passenger seat, and headed to an all-night convenience store. We found one store open about two miles down the road. We pulled in, gassed up and headed back to the beach house. It was a straight shot, just a few minutes down a four-lane highway.…
