Lab Introduction:
A cell needs to maintain homeostasis. In order for cells to reach homeostasis they regulate certain materials through selectively permeable membranes. In cells the primary solvent or the solvent of life is water, so a solution where water is the solvent it is called an aqueous solution. The movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration is known as diffusion. The diffusion of water is called osmosis in which water moves slowly across a selectively permeable membrane. Hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic environments are the three environments are used to compare solutions that are divided by a membrane that is selectively permeable.     Introduction: The biological membranes are composed of phospholipid bilayers, each phospholipid with hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails, and proteins. This arrangement of the proteins and lipids produces a selectively permeable membrane. Many kinds of molecules surround or are contained within cells, but water is perhaps the single most important molecule in any living system (Hayden and McNeil 2012). Since water molecules are so small, they are constantly going into and out of the cell. Osmosis is a situation where more water molecules are moving across the membrane in one direction than the other (Hayden and McNeil 2012). During osmosis the net movement of water molecules will be from a solution that has a lower osmotic concentration to a solution that has a higher osmotic concentration. When a solution has a higher concentration of solute within the cell than out, it is called hypertonic. When a solution has a lower concentration of solute within the cell than out, it is called hypotonic. And when there are equal concentrations inside and out of the cell, it is called isotonic. Place four more pipettes full of glucose into the dialysis tubing. Repeat this 4 (four) more times until there is a total of 5 pipettes of glucose and 5 pipettes of starch in the dialysis tubing. Mix the solution. Next, seal the dialysis tubing completely and make sure there is little to no air left in the dialysis tubing. Rise the bag with water. Next, fill a 400ml beaker with 300ml of water. Add 5 pipettes of Lugol´s into the 300ml of water. Mix the solution gently. Place the dialysis tubing bag into the 400ml beaker and leave for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes remove the bag and record your findings. Get 3 test tubes and label them “control” “bag” and “beaker” Next fill an unused pipette with water and pour it into the control test tube. Open the dialysis tubing and fill a pipette of the solution inside using an unused pipette. Repeat again and pour into the bag test tube.
