Purpose:
To see how much osmosis or diffusion will occurs in potato cell based on the concentration of molarity.
Procedure:
Obtained 3 cups and label A, B, and C To cup A added 150ml H2O and 8.775gNaCl (stirred cup) Poured 50ml of solution in cup A to cup B To cup B added an additional 50ml H2O To cup C added 100ml H2O Potato Cores; Took 3 potato cores using corer tool Cut each to 3cm in length Measured and recorded the initial mass Placed each core in cups A, B, & C Left it for overnight
Data Presentation
Osmosis in Potato Cells
Sample Molarity Initial Mass Final Mass % △ Mass
A .992 .34g .28g -17.6%
B .496 .29 .23 -20.6%
C 0 .34g .42 23.5%
Data Analysis:
Table: The table was recorded before and after the experiment. The table lists the initial mass, final mass, molarity, and the change of mass in percentage form. It also shows that cup A and B lost mass while Cup C gained mass.
Graph: The graph shows the changes in mass verses molarity.
Conclusion
My data supported my hypothesis which was: Salt will make the potatoes mass less. What am basically trying to say is Cup A and B will gain mass because of the salt, and cup c will gain weight since it is just water. I learned that if there is salt outside, it will go inside, and the water inside the potato will come out. Since the potato is hypotonic and the outside is hypertonic. And if there is no salt outside, the salt that is already in potato will come out and spread. Since in Cup C the water outside is hypotonic, and the potato is hypertonic.
