Essay number 1 Sometimes, people make deals with themselves, it may be a promise, a vow, or a personal goal that they must complete to feel accomplished. This summer on my family vacation, I did just that wanting to conquer one of my biggest fears, heights. The summer of 2009, my family hopped into my little car looking forward to a peaceful outdoors vacation, our destination, a tranquil cabin located in Summersville, West Virgina. The area was spectacular, the cabin quaint, the water blissfully inviting, everything was just perfect, we found our own little utopia. Many days we would hike down to the lake enjoying picnics atop the gently sun warmed boulders as the soft breeze caressed our faces. It was sensationally relaxing, I had but a care in the world, until we came across that magnificent 43 foot waterfall. You may be asking yourself how a simple waterfall could change the course of my carefree vacation, no one died or was seriously injured, really nothing all that exciting happened. Only, I made a simple pledge, all I needed to do was jump off that waterfalls rugged ledge into a safe blanket of the blue water below. Simple, right? Well, I thought it was, or I probably wouldn't have made that silly bet with no one but myself. Everyday, I would trudge to the top determined to succeed, nevertheless once I reached the top and realized just how lofty the fall was, I cowardly walked away. Suddenly, that breathtakingly gorgeous waterfall became my biggest enemy, ever time I but glanced at it, I felt like a failure. No one was holding me to my "deal", I could back out at anytime, there would be no physical repercussions waiting for when I gave up, simply my own disappointment. The days went flying by, turning into a week, week and a half, two weeks, suddenly the day we were to depart home had arrived, my
