Overview Of Nursing Practice
An article by Shirey et al. (2011) mentions the confusion that exists between quality improvement (QI), evidence-based practice (EBP), and research. The article mentions that QI and EBP have different historical origins. QI was developed in the business community and EBP was developed in the medical community. Early nursing research has been attributed to Florence Nightingale. The terms have been combined to form the base of nursing practice and are all interrelated. The article explains that QI, EBP, and Research are like three legs of a stool with the seat being nursing practice. Without any of the three, nursing practice cannot remain strong and stable (Shirey et al., 2011).

In the past, it was difficult to collect data and research utilization was often only based on one study instead of multiple studies. This was problematic when the studies conflicted or were not of the same quality. With the advent of electronic data and increased capabilities to produce data and validate data quality, research has been able to be moved into practice more successfully. External or research evidence has come to be valued as a guide to clinical decisions that can improve clinical outcomes (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). References
