In the past, it was difficult to collect data and research utilization was often only based on one study instead of multiple studies. This was problematic when the studies conflicted or were not of the same quality. With the advent of electronic data and increased capabilities to produce data and validate data quality, research has been able to be moved into practice more successfully. External or research evidence has come to be valued as a guide to clinical decisions that can improve clinical outcomes (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). References
