America - Land of the Free, home of the obese? As our country wages war against terrorism overseas, another domestic battle is taking place: the battle against fat. At the turn of the millennium, an estimated 64 percent of American adults were either overweight or obese (CDC). This unsettling statistic reveals the fact that the United States' proud citizens have trouble digesting, that we are the fattest country on the planet. In today's society, technological advances allow us to go about daily life with the least possible amount of physical exertion. Combine that with an infinite supply of cheap, delicious, and high-calorie food and it adds up to a problem of "supersized" proportion. It became official in 2000 when U.S. Surgeon General David…

Obesity has become a real problem in the USA. It is shown to be linked to many health problems. In the article, Obesity: An Overview by Ellen Bailey and Ann Griswold PhD., the authors discuss the history of obesity, as well as obesity today. They believe that obesity is a big problem in America and something needs to be done about it. "Obesity has been linked to a number of health problems, including diabetes and heart disease; however, the social problems facing obese people are often overlooked" (1) states the authors. Obesity is basically killing people slowly. It all depends on what health problem you end up with. They also express that, "Overweight children, in particular, can be socially and psychologically harmed by their peers’ criticisms about their weight” (1).The child’s peers’ criticisms may hurt their feelings and the child may be emotionally harmed on the inside. The child may turn to self-harm if the criticisms go too far. The child could feel like no one wants them around because they are overweight. Also, some children might want to do something about their weight so that the criticism stops. Bailey and Griswold do a good job organizing this article together. The article is in chorological order, up to date, clear, persuasive, and factual, but it is not backed by citation.…

Our world today, it seems all people are doing is eating out and sitting on the couch. The influx of easily available junk food is causing people to gain weight at a much higher rate than in previous years. This might be because people are ill-informed about what they are putting into their bodies and what the consequences are of them eating poorly. While this poor diet could be counter-balanced with exercise, many people are falling short of their recommended daily regimen. Readily available food and soda has become a newer phenomenon in the last couple of decades, and it continues to become larger problem every year. This is something not many people think about, but it is a problem because more and more people are choosing to eat fast food instead of staying home and cooking healthy meals…

Although obesity is a massive problem in the United States, not many people actually know what obesity is. There are millions of Americans that would be considered obese by doctors, and they do not even realize they fall into that category. Most doctors consider men obese when they contain more than 25% body fat and women obese that contain more than 30% body fat. Based on those criteria, nearly 62% of Americans are considered obese and could possibly struggle from health complications in the near future ("Centers for disease control and prevention"). Those criteria seem pretty strict to many people but that is not the case. The human body is built to only carry a specific amount of weight, and although that may vary from…

In recent decades, the shift of eating practices has changed considerably due to the overwhelming popularity of fast food. Mirriam Webster’s Dictionary defines fast food “relating to, or specializing in food that can be prepared and served quickly” and is also supported with “little consideration given to quality or significance.” The readiness of these meals allows consumers to go about other matters, thus becoming a desirable option when time is under question. While there are many benefits to fast foods, awareness of consumption of such foods is alerting health professionals as unhealthy practices are directly linked to obesity and diseases like diabetes. In recent years there are reports of people filing lawsuits against fast food corporations claiming…

The people of America certainly digest too much food and try to find ways to cope with their obesity. In the lead with a 30.1 percentile for obesity is the Unites States. While there are many diverse foods that would attract your attention, you cannot blame a person’s obesity on “good food”. It is an individual’s choice to make a sound eating decision, what they put in their mouth is their choice. One could make the decision to eat uncontrollably and then say that they are happy with their obesity. That is most likely a false claim made to either ignore their consequence for a bad decision or repress feelings and…

Jefferey Kluger makes a good point in his article “How America’s Children Packed on the Pounds”. He clearly puts it “It wasn’t easy to produce a generation of overfed kids- but it might well have been inevitable”. Americans love their food. The settlers came to a new place that was abundant with it. No shortage of game, and fields that produced plentiful yields. Americans love with food started early, the first national holiday established was Thanksgiving. Americans have always been in an environment where food was plentiful. Kluger states “Humans, like most animals, are hardwired not just to eat but to gorge”. Humans go back to their instincts and not only prefer more food than necessary, but also food that is high in calories. Over eating wasn’t nearly as big of problem back when men and women were burning off almost all the calories they took in. In today’s world it is much different, where people just overeat and don’t do anything to shed the extra intake. If you take into account overweight people not just the obese about two-thirds of Americans weigh more than they should according to Kluger. This problem is becoming more in more common in children. Percentages of children’s obesity have sky rocketed over the past decades. Along with being overweight other problems are arising from this epidemic. Children are contracting diseases thought only possible to get as an adult. “Health experts warn that the current generation of children may be the first in American History to have a shorter life expectancy then their parents”, Kluger put in his paper. Its also become evident that along with taking in an abundance of extra calories no one is worrying about not being active to get rid of them. Schools are cutting physical education programs to save money not caring about the consequences it is causing the students. Americans are fighting back. Some children’s parents are trying to fight it at home in their kitchens. There are public awareness…
