I am going to be explaining the 6 prime sociological perspectives and their views on health.
Marxism- The Marxist theory looks at the bourgeoisie and the proletariat role in society through employment. Proletariat is the word used to determine the ‘wage-earners’ in society, and are generally the working class who have average jobs and work for somebody else. Bourgeoisie on the other hand is used to describe the people who own and run the industrial environment and work places, they are usually middle class and have the proletariat working for them because they own the means of production. Marxist believe the bourgeoisie make use of the proletariat and have both cultural and economic power over them, this then leads to class conflict. From a health point of view Marxist would say that society functions deliberately so the bourgeoisie stay in power and stay wealthy and so that the proletariat stay at working class and have no chance of building themselves up. They would also stress at the fact that the bourgeoisie’s power if ascribed and certainly not achieved, because how can it be achieved if the proletariat are not able to build themselves up how can they end up being in power. They say the NHS should be accessible to anyone and everyone and no matter what class you fall under healthcare should not be not available to anyone. Marxist also believe that whether you are proletariat or bourgeoisie, the amount you earn and your ability to pay should not determined whether or not you can have access to health care and medication and that equality is wrong and everyone should be aloud the same opportunities.
Functionalism- The functionalist perspective describes society like the human body, in the sense that society as a whole has social institutions to help it run smoothly these are education, family and the law. When one of the parts fails or shuts down the rest suffer and society is not running
