Type of Business
Matalan started off as a local business in Preston, it then became national by founding stores across England, Scotland and Wales. is owned by private citizens rather than being a public organisation for example Tesco and Asda. Matalan is a tertiary sector as it involves selling the products to the consumers and businesses, advertising them and transporting them across the stores. Primary sector is the one which obtain raw materials for example cocoa beans for chocolate which are the sold in store. Then there comes the Secondary sector which manufactures the goods which is like the Cadbury chocolate bars which is made in the factories.
Purpose
The purpose of this organisation is that they promise to provide exceptional value for money. They do this by selling products which are 50% off the actual high street price. They buy clothes and items straight from the manufacturer at the highest quality and they also have their own in-house design team who produce these items at a low cost and so that they can offer us unbeatable value. Another purpose of Matalan that they wish to achieve is that they want to expand their business and be number one in the market shares.
As this is a profit organisation they aim to make as much profit from the stock that they buy and they sell a range of different products which includes home ware, clothes and accessories. They sell clothes from top designers like Jeff Banks, Calvin Klein and Farah. Non-profit organisations like BHF (British Heart Foundation) aim to make customers happy and work not to earn money for themselves but to give in charity.
Ownership
Matalan Ltd is a private sector which is not owned by the government whereas BHF is a public organisation which is owned by the government. BHF is a voluntary organisation as it focuses on wider public benefit because the business is helping out people across the world. Matalan is a PLC which stands for a private limited company and an example of a public limited company is Microsoft. Matalan Ltd is a private limited company which has a share capital.
Matalan was previously a sole trader business as it was owned by the founder of the business whose name is John Hargreaves but it has now become a partnership business as it is owned by the Hargreaves family themselves.
Matalan have been a supporter of the charitable trust NSPCC since 2004 and the owner has a centre in Liverpool called the Hargreaves centre. As well as this The safe place appeal has raised £16.5 million through a combination of public funding and donations in Matalan stores across the UK. The British Museum which is based in London is a government agency and is sponsored by the government’s department which is called Department for Culture, Media and Sport through a three year funding agreement.
Brown hill Playgroup Limited which is based in Blackburn is an example of a worker cooperative which means that the members of the company who work in the business own the business. This means that the workers can work in one or more roles and there is no chairman or CEO who runs the business.
Matalan will be liable for loss or damage that the customers suffer of the product that is a foreseeable result of our breach of the companies Terms or their negligence. Owners liability of debt Sole traders are the ones who own the business and they would have unlimited liability for debt. A partnership business is one which is run by a number of partners and all the partners in the business would have limited liability partnership. Public limited company Limited companies have limited liability and charitable organisations have a board of trustees who would be liable for any debts.
Non-profit organisation- British Heart Foundation
Type of Business
BHF was first a local business and now it has become a national business which originated after a group of researchers decided to create an organisation which dealt with cures for heart disease as a huge number of people were dying at the current time. Examples of local businesses are for example Marks and Spencer’s and an example of International businesses and global businesses are Asda and Thornton’s. They are the UK’s number one heart charity and have 735 shops or stores across the UK including 168 furniture and electrical stores. As well as this, they spent approximately millions on general medical research in the last 2 years. They also support 1,158 healthcare professionals across the UK.
BHF is a public organisation and it is a not for profit organisation. It is also an example of a voluntary organisation as people who work within that organisation help out those who are in need around the world for no costs. Examples of profit organisations are Tesco, Asda and other big supermarkets.
The primary sector of a business is the one which obtains raw materials for the products to be sold for example cocoa beans for chocolate which are then sold in store. Then there comes the Secondary sector which manufactures the goods, which is like the Cadbury chocolate bars which are made in the factories.
BHF is a tertiary sector as it provides services to the people and also sells products in stores across the UK to which the money is given into charity.
Purpose
The main purpose of the British Heart Foundation is that they are dedicated to fighting against heart disease. Their main task is to keep hearts beating and they fund ground-breaking research for various heart diseases. They are the UK’s number one heart charity organisation who have made a big difference to people’s lives. They fund scientists and researchers to research into that particular heart disease so as to treat particular diseases and cure them in order for those who are suffering to survive.
The BHF provide many services such as helping cure those people who are suffering from a number of heart related illnesses such as angina, heart failure, heart attack and abnormal heart rhythms. As well as this they also sell a number of products which either the charity buys for the store or the public themselves donate different types of products to the store. The main reason is that they make money to fund for research that cures people from heart disease. They sell quality new and donated clothing, shoes, accessories, CDs, books and DVDs, sofas, beds, rugs, washing machines, toasters, kettles, microwaves and TVs. Another purpose of the BHF is that they are not to be successful in wealth but in helping the needy, and also they have been established to make everything better and work in good harmony amongst mankind. In profit organisations, like Sainsbury’s the business works towards a certain goal of the amount of profit they wish to receive from selling the products of the business. In non- profit organisations like BHF the company works towards putting smiles on people’s faces and works towards helping other people and not making money for themselves.
Ownership
BHF is a public company which is a company that is limited by guarantee in England and Wales. This means that the company doesn’t have any shareholders however it is controlled by two or more members. The BHF is also a voluntary sector of business as most not all employees who work in this organisation help out by volunteering to take part in different events that help the organisation raise money to fund research that cures heart disease. An example of a private company is Matalan which is a private limited company which is run by the owners of the company themselves and isn’t government funded. The British Heart Foundation is a partnership business as it is an organisation with works with both the government and thousands of supporters across the UK. As well as this other businesses like Asda, Dfs, Your M&S, and Tefal etc. have all teamed up with BHF, to make a big difference in people’s lives and playing a vital role in saving their lives, by putting public access defibrillators across the stores. BHF isn’t liable for any damages which occur during the use of this site, such as loss of profits or any other problems which arise. BHF would not be responsible, financially or otherwise for expenditure or liabilities which arise out of the work funded out of the Grant. As well as this BHF would not be liable for any amount in excess of the Grant. BHF rely solely on The Host Institution who ensure that all the research being produced is up to its best standard in order to avoid any damage which may occur. As well as this BHF requires the Institution to take reasonable precautions upon health of safety of the people working in the research facilities, and BHF do not accept liability of any injuries which are sustained, loss or damages which are caused by that particular research and/or research activity. Also customers expect that the money they donated to BHF goes straight into the funding money for heart disease research. BHF would have to make policies that there environment is a discrimination free environment and those who breal those rules would have to undertake a punishment.
The company managers would have to make a truthful agreement that the money the customers donated is going straight to the funding of the charity.
Owners The owners of a charitable organisation are the board of trustees and the directors. There are many different types of directors in the company. Examples would be the retail director and the other would be the medical director of the company. They would both want that people donate money to the organisation.
They would also want that the organisation is run smoothly.
They would also want the business expands and becomes known worldwide. The owners themselves would advertise their organisation, hold fundraising events that would spread the message of this charity and make more people join the organisation.
They would also hold fundraising events for BHF in other countries all over the world so that the message spreads internationally and globally so that more people fund for a good cause.
Suppliers The suppliers of the organisation would want that they are treated fairly when making transactions and their goods are donated 100% to BHF.
The suppliers of the service would want the organisation expands and grows. They would want this so that they also make money for themselves and help a good cause.
The suppliers of the business also want that they are taking regualr orders from the organisation. The company managers would have to make a truthful agreement that the money the customers donated is going straight to the funding of the charity.
The organisation would advertise their company in many different ways, for example through advertising in newspapers, on T.V in brochures etc.
The company would have to keep a good relationship with their suppliers in order for them to take regualr orders and also receive goods on credits.

Ther company would have to keep a good relationship with the community and persaude them to join/volounteer in their organisation for free of cost.
Task 4- Evaluate the influence different stakeholders exert in one organisation
The stakeholders can influence Matalan in many different ways. The customers can infleunce the business as they are the ones who buy the products from the store such as clothes, shoes, accessories and many other products and they spread the word. The business themselves would have to shut down if the customers give a negative review about the business so that the means the company would have to try their best to fulfill business objective for example offer a great value of money so thast customers shop at the store.
The owners or the managers of Matalan can influence the business as they are the ones who make decisions for the business to run as a whole and through their decisions that is the only the business can become succesful and be given a good reputation. In some circumstances the owners can make decisions for example the manger of matalan may want to expand the business. This may be a good thing as it would mean more space to put goods like clothes but it could also be a bad thing for example, expanding the buildings could cost a huge amount.
The employees can influence the stakeholders as if they arent paid enough wages for the job then this means they could go on strike and sometimes the company themselves could lose employees.
As well as this staff turnover could also take place if they are not happy with the business and this means that the staff would leave the company and they would have to be repalced with other employees. Even though it may seem a bad thing that employees have left the business due to retirement or they have moved away it can also be seen as a good thing. It can be seen as a good thing as new people would be bought into the organisation and they would have new and fresh persepctives for the
business.
The suppliers could influence the business in many ways as they are the ones who supply the products and if the transactions they make with the business are difficult then this would cause the suppliers to leave the business and deal with another rival business. As well as this, the suppliers could influence the business by not making deliveries to Matalan on time and increasing the price of the products which would effect the company as they would have pay more to buy the products. The suppliers would also have to provide good quailty products to the business because if the products are not good enough to sell to the customer then this means that the customer wouldn’t buy from the store due to the quality of the products.
The local community can influence a business in many ways. One of them being that they can be very opiniated and discuss certain issues that arise due to the production of goods for Matalan. Such as for example the factories that make the goods for Matalan, could cause pollution to the environment and this would cause the business to be given a bad review.
The government also influence business objectives as they are the ones who make the rules and frameworks that tell the business how to run. From time to time, the government change these policies and frameworks which cause the way the business operates. For example, a government rule has been established that Matalan has to provide services for the diasbled for example building ramps into shops.
