Papca Monologue
I'm furious about going to Raven University. I've never in my whole life been away from home. I'm not ready to leave Pappa behind yet. After Ma died I was all he had left. If I leave, he will be all alone on the farm.

The thought makes me shudder. If I could, I would stay here with Pappa and manage the farm. Sadly I have no choice in the matter. A few months ago men from the Republic came to the farm. They tested me in various ways.

I was hooked onto several wires while I answered their questions. Sometimes they made me do physical exercises. On one occasion a sample of my blood was taken.

The Test.

That is what is it is called. Every year agents from the Republic test all children at the age of seventeen. They came on my birthday. The

I love our farm. I enjoy hard work. I live for a challenge. Living on the farm shaped me into a fit, capable and adaptable young lady.

My roots are planted firmly in this rich earth of Greenroc and the Republic just came and ripped me away. I'm leaving with a broken heart. But, I'm not near being a broken girl.

If the choice was mine I'd stay on the farm. Stay with Pappa. Unfortunately we don't choose how our lives go. The Republic chooses for us.

And unfortunately for the Republic I think, I'm a fighter. I won't let them get away with this. It might take me years, but I'll get my revenge.

I stand at the door of our modest farm house. Pappa is talking to the man from the Republic who is assigned to take me to the university. It has never been a dream of mine to go to university. My dreams doesn't matter to the Republic however. Our lives are dictated by its rule.

I'm angry thinking about the Republic. My fists are clenched at my sides and my breathing has become hard and uneven. They can't do this. They can't choose the life I'm going to live. But what can I do? I ask myself. Nothing. I can't do anything.

Not now, anyway.

The rules of the Republic are the supreme laws of our existence and there is nothing I can do to break

Everyone keeps telling me all these things. How strong I am. How Sangwoo was a horrible person and it isn’t my fault. How they believe in me to get better and how they believe in me to eventually have a life. But they don’t know. I’m an awful person. I tell them that I killed someone and how I stalked sangwoo and how I walked into it and how I was kind and loving to sangwoo, I even did sexual things with him and all these things that show I am truly awful. But they just smile softly at me and tell me that’s it ok, that I’m safe, that I’ll get better, that I’ll get better. I don’t know if I’ll get better.…

    Mount Vernon

Driving into Mount Vernon reveals a lively downtown wonderland with family restaurants on every corner, and bars with their bright flashing beer promotions in the windows tempting every man and woman to enter and enjoy a cool beer. These bars raise farmers on pedestals of alcohol induced happiness to attempt to suppress the complications mother nature throws their way. From raging floods, to dust filled droughts farmers meticulously tend to their land and livestock with a stubborn unwillingness to allow nature to have its way. Day in and day out rugged boots plow through mud filled pastures chasing down a stubborn ewe, or repairing yet another broken fence. The farmers pride rules them and forces them to stay in their own bubble oblivious to the world outside of corn and livestock. It is this pride that restricts farmers from ever leaving the corn that has gripped them so tightly. While citizens of other towns go out, travel, enjoy a nice long break from work, farmers have to stay home and milk the cows, repair the newest broken fence, or harvest the crops. It is nearly impossible for a farmer with livestock to ever escape their home, because their home can’t survive without them.…

I grew up in the concrete jungle; my Grandfather, David Gillespie, grew up on a farm. These two worlds are starkly different from one another, as John Steinbeck highlights in his novel, The Grapes of Wrath and Gillespie describes in his childhood tales. The compilation of these two tales highlights the increasing role and dependence on technology coupled with the stigma that continually surrounds agricultural workers from the Great Depression to the more modern era. To begin, my full revelation of this idea came to me as I interviewed Gillespie. It became quickly evident how dependent on technology his family’s farm was as he stated, “My father had draft horses, but they didn’t last long once we got a tractor” (Gillespie).…

Farm life has also exposed me to 4-H and FFA. In 4-H, I learned showmanship, commitment, hard work, and much about responsibility. I showed steers, hogs, sheep, rabbit, and dogs. I’ve showed animals for 6 years and I would have to say my favorite experiences in 4-H would have to be showing my dog, Mocha. With Mocha, I was able to earn Grand Champion Agility Dog and Reserve Champion Dog Showman. Over the years I’ve also earned Champion Market Ewe, Champion Sheep Showman, and 1st place Market Steer.…

George and Lennie have dreams about owning a farm of their own instead of working for other farmers. They do not want to do strenuous labor for other men but instead have a farm in which they have the freedom to do as they please. However, not being regulated by superior individuals is not the only thing they crave. With a farm comes a nice cozy home. A home isn’t a place decorated with elegant furniture or artifacts in the corners.…
