The Cycle Day Campaign is an initiative by Bengaluru Coalition for Open Streets (BCOS), a non-profit collective comprising DULT, Praja RAAG, EMBARQ, ESAF and individuals, with support from Bangalore police (traffic and law & order) and BBMP. The purpose of the campaign is to promote cycling and other forms of non-motorised transport by reclaiming streets and converting them into open, safe, pleasant, people-friendly public spaces. The campaign has received tremendous support and participation from citizens across Bangalore, many of whom actively volunteer to organize campaign events.
We conceptualised the campaign to make cycling and other forms of non-motorised transport mainstream again, to effect a dramatic increase in the usage of cycling and walking for commuting, shopping and leisure, and to promote cycling as a green, healthy and safe alternative to motor vehicles. At the same time the campaign aims to provide our government partners with thepublic support and impetus needed to create an enablingenvironment for cyclists and pedestrians through the planning and development of cycle lanes, footpaths, safe, people-friendly roads, cycle rental schemes, city-wide cycle parking stands and so on. For example, the Transport Minister of Karnataka, Shri Ramalinga Reddy after attending November's Cycle Day announced an initiative to install cycle rentals at all TTMC's in the city. The DULT, acknowledging issues with existing cycling lanes, has also recently announced completion of detailed project reports for dedicated cycling lanes in Madiwala, HSR Layout, Koramangala, RT Nagar and Indiranagar.
Each event, we block a certain section of roads to motor vehicle traffic and to throw open the streets to cyclists, pedestrians and other non-motorised transport users. To encourage those wishing to explore cycling, we provide over 250 free cycle rentals at each event, and work with volunteers and the traffic police to facilitate a smooth ride for
