Parable Of The Sadhu Analysis
The Parable of the Sadhu is a good example of how ones individual ethics is not always aligned with good corporate values. Corporate ethics are principles and standards accepted by an organization to guide decision making. It involves the consideration of the interest of the stakeholders and uses core values to make decisions. Individual ethics is more of one’s inner voice of how people should to act, based on standards of behavior. Ethical people strive to make right decisions in all situations and do not rationalize their actions based on their own self-interest. In business environment it is necessary to have a set of commonly agreed upon values to guide employees in making their ethical decisions. When corporate ethics in ineffective, people unconsciously act as individuals and stick to their own set of value. The breakdown happens when the individual allows his personal value to take control over the corporate values. …show more content…
At stage two the individual is focused on satisfying ones interest but mores into considering the interest of other in stage three. Their goal of climbing the pass was important to him since he had previously failed because of pulmonary edema. He felt that he had satisfied his moral obligation with leaving the sadhu with the Stephen. Stephen tried to get the Japanese group to lend their horse to carry the sadhu down to the hut and he asked Passang to have him carried down but he could not allow the porters to use their energy because they needed it to get to the summit. Passang advised Stephen to not delay any longer and Stephen gave into the pressure of group ethics and ended at stage 3 fairness to the sadhu. He was hopeful that later climbers would come to the aid of the sadhu. That shows the bystander effect that someone else will do what we can’t. The bystander effect affected all the climbers. All of them assumed that the next group of climbers would help the sadhu

    The Parable of the Sadhu is a story of men climbing the Himalayas that run into a moral dilemma. These are not just any men. These are groups of men from many different cultural backgrounds. As they are climbing the mountain they run into a nearly naked Indian holy man that is near death. The moral dilemma comes into play when they are forced to make the decision to backtrack down the mountain to save the man and probably never reach their ultimate goal, or ignore the needs of the desperate man in order to fulfill their personal desires. By looking at the situation and what the men did it is clear that they acted through the ethical thought process of egoism and social contract. They acted out of egoism because all the groups of men acted out of their own self interest and did not do what was necessary to help the man, because it would have been detrimental to their personal mission. They also acted out of social contract because they felt obliged to help their fellow man. In the social contract theory an individual’s action is bound only by his or her conscience. Each of the individual groups of men did a singular act to help because of the implied obligation by our social contract, although none of them went the whole way and saved the man’s life.
