Paraprofessional Reflection
This lesson plan incorporates collaborating with a paraprofessional, and was discovered through current employment in the local school district. While performing my duties of classroom paraprofessional, I was sitting in the back of a classroom watching the regular education teacher give instruction on the subject content she was introducing, which was liquid measurement. The teacher, I believe would do anything to teach measurements to her students, due to the fact the students were struggling with the strategies she engaged in up until this point, and they were producing less than favorable results. It was at this time I encountered my first collaboration. After class, the teacher standing before me displayed a look of defeat in her eyes. “I need to find an easier way to present this lesson with visuals, so their comprehension is enhanced.” is the statement that produced a collaboration between myself and the regular education teacher to find a more appropriate way for the teacher present the lesson. …show more content…
With limited time to find a solution, the collaboration was efficient but not time consuming, but crucial in attaining success in this area of comprehension needed for the students. The effective communication engaged in between the teacher and paraprofessional make it easier for the paraprofessional to understand exactly what the teacher expects of the students, and the assistance of the paraprofessional allows the teacher to present the lesson in a group setting with little distraction of the students, due to the students being engaged in a lesson plan that offers stimulation and student engagement, while the paraprofessional makes every effort to ensure all students are focused and on

In addition, to a staff recognition program, I created a paraprofessional in training presentation. The goal of the presentation was to train future paraprofessionals in their role and expectations as it relates to school policy. The presentation helped teachers provide less training to paraprofessionals during instructional time. They were better able to focus on teaching and achieving student goals. New paraprofessionals were more confident when stepping into the classroom. I take pleasure in being able to help teachers and paraprofessionals work together to meet the needs of the students.…

The relationship of the teacher and paraprofessional can be challenging. Rarely, have teachers been given training how to work effectively with paraprofessionals and paraprofessionals have reported that “they have more responsibility than is appropriate and that they do not receive adequate guidance” (Wallace, 2003). There are many different forms of relationships that can be successful for a teacher and paraprofessional. McGrath, Johns, and Mathur (2010) offer the following advice for…

Another teacher teaches by working problems out and showing students examples, then makes them work the problem while she works it on the board. This is helpful in classes like math and physics. She does well in teaching the information, and making sure everyone understands. Telling students how to do a problem step-by- step helps them have a clear concise understanding of the steps to complete when working the problems or equations. This attempt is helping students who learn by watching something be done or listening to how to do something all at once. Once she feels they understand she makes…

While Mrs. Corcoran and I discussed about the lesson, we went over last minute details before Maercker Intermediate School’s spring break and the rest of my spring break. Mrs. Corcoran reassured me she will respond to her emails over break to discuss about the co-taught lesson. Mrs. Corcoran approves and enjoys the idea of having students focus on both social skills and math goals throughout this lesson. I learned collaborating with others can be quite nervous racking, but I have full confidence Mrs. Corcoran and I can teach this lesson, and work with another class.…

While Mrs. Corcoran and I discussed with her what type of instructional strategies she uses and she said manipulatives and visual aids work best for her students. Each student’s IEP accommodations and modifications require manipulatives, differentiated instruction, and visual aids during instructional delivery and assessment. My lesson includes manipulatives and visual aids, which increases the likelihood students will be able to generalize the measurable objective, reading and relating time to analog and digital clocks. During the discussion, it was not about how I want to teach it is how about how to teach the lesson to students, or delivery a student-centered activity. If I did not include manipulatives and visual aids, such a lecture style instructional delivery, students would not be able to understand the material, due to the fact, it does not differentiate instruction, which results in the loss or decrease of student learning.…

During this assignment, I will be discussing whether or not it is worth the financial cost of having a Teaching Assistant (TA) within a classroom setting. I will be elaborating on: the roles and responsibilities that Teaching Assistants have and how this can be affected by both the Teacher and the children in the class; the effect that they have on the children’s learning both in group and on a one to one situations; different opinions that people have about TAs and how this can affect the class team and I will also be discussing people’s views on whether or not Teaching Assistants are worth the money. TA’s can play a vital role in the classroom but may also be used ineffectively. I will be highlighting the importance this plays in a classroom…
