Achievements of success are seen as positive attributes. Thus leading to a certain achieved status and maintaining that status can be a burden. All achievements are not positive achievements, in fact some hinder your ability to grow and develop. On the reservation, a real man is a strong man; he shows no weakness and does not take crap from anyone. Rowdy exerts all of these qualities, as well as fulfilling this image of a rough, tough guy, “Rowdy is the toughest kid on the rez. He is long and lean and strong like a snake” (15). Rowdy is seen as a dominant “Alpha male” on the reservation, this meaning an aggressive and dominant bully. Being known for being tough is a self-achievement, but having to maintain that status conflicts with him internally as well as externally. Having the burden of perpetuating this status hinders his psychological and emotional growth with others, including family and friends. This dominantly reflects upon his best friend Junior, who is well aware of Rowdy’s lack of affection towards him, “well Rowdy would miss me, but he’d never admit that he’d miss me. He is way too tough for that kind of emotion” (16). It is unfortunate that Rowdy’s attitude in relations to Junior interferes with the emotional bond between them. Rowdy is unable to develop an…

He is very sentimental and sensitive. He is afraid of being by himself in a new world. Not having Rowdy in Reardon High School, makes it a little bit harder for Junior because people will make fun of him and could also hurt him. On page 54 Junior says, “I’m scared dad.” Dad replied, “You can always go back to the Rez School.” Junior does not want to go back to the Rez School because he could get hurt and he also won’t be able to get a good education. Junior already made the decision of going to a different school and he was not going to give it up just because he was scared. Junior has conquered some of his weakness. An example in which show us that Junior has overcome one of his fears is when Roger made a racist comment about Indians. He said, “Did you know that Indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?” Junior punched Roger in the face and then challenged him to fight but instead Roger walked away from Junior. This is a big achievement for Junior because this time he didn’t have to depend on Rowdy to help him out. Little by little, Junior is defeating his…

Junior is plagued with unfortunate experiences throughout the novel but he keeps pushing forward with a positive attitude and a goal in mind. In Carver’s another story “A small, good thing”, reflects the importance of reconciliation is related to a family. The narratives can be dramatically different among family members under the same roof. The core notion of reconciliation, according to Susan Dwyer, “is that of bringing apparently incompatible descriptions of events into narrative equilibrium.” Reconciliation is the act of bringing back harmony to the endangered relationships, accepting the coexistence, and pushing the family to carry on with mutual understanding. This essay proposes several questions while exploring the reconciliation theme inside a family dwelling. From Hanif Kureishi’s story “My Son the Fanatic”, Raymond Carver’s story “Elephant” and his another story “A small, good thing”, those stories give examples to illustrate the points below. Why reconciliation is needed? What is the basis of reconciliation? What…
