Passion Paper
Many people’s passions are something they have been doing for most of their lives. Growing up, most people including myself believed that my passion would be football since I had been playing it all my life. It was not until this past year that I found something I could be passionate about: the military. I joined the military April 23, 2013 and by the end of May it was time for me to be shipped off for basic training. In the days leading up to my departure, it felt like I had butterflies in my stomach; it reminded me of the way I felt before we stepped on the field for a football game, nervous but excited at the same time. Joining the military has changed my life in many ways from my mindset to my motivation to the many benefits that come my way.
The day I swore in my mindset changed on a lot; I had originally joined so that I could pay for my college but then I began talking to some of my family members that are in the Army and are successful. By doing this it made me want to make a career out of it. I decided that I would put more time and effort into the Army to better myself in it. I also decided to better myself in school too, so that I would be able to graduate and become an officer in the Army.
Going through basic training was hard work but I knew in my mind that I needed to get through it to do what I wanted later on in life. Whenever I do something related to the Army now I try to do my best because I know you can get promotions and other opportunities based on how well you do. This motivated me more to push myself through any hardships and gave me the drive to do better because my goal is to be a Major by the time I decide to leave the Army in about twenty years. At first, all I cared about was having a way to pay for my education but now I find myself motivated to succeed and become a higher ranking officer. It is the random motivation that makes me realize that the military just may be my passion.
Not only has the Army changed my work ethic

My decision to join the military in general I believe subconsciously started when my older brother returned from Army basic training. While my brother was a pretty smart guy he had never really been to apply himself nor did he have the drive to, but whatever had happened to him during army basic training had made a change in him; a change for the best. He came back and the transformation was evident in every single one of his actions and thoughts. He had a drive to accomplish all of his goals dreams and aspiration, not only that he had the discipline necessary to stay on his new found path. I went on to college in the fall fallowing his return from basic training not sure if these new traits and strength I saw in him would continue or disappear. When I returned home that fall after my first semester and talked to him and I saw the changes had stayed with him and grown even further. With all that he had used the tools he had been given to accomplish so much in already so little of time. All that stayed in my head, but it did not become relevant to me until my sophomore year of college. I realized that while I was…

Having severed almost eight years in the United States Army I was faced with several obstacles. I had the obstacles of multiple deployments to Iraq, injuries, and being medically retired. The multiple deployments gave forth several obstacles. The first being the danger of being in a hostile environment, everyday not knowing if you or your battle-buddy was going to see the next day. Second, the obstacle of the stress on my marriage, my wife not knowing from day-to-day what I was doing or if she’d be getting that knock at the door from an Army Chaplin saying I was dead. And third, the mental anguish that I and every Soldier that severed in Iraq and Afghanistan was faced with on a daily bases. Having severed during a time when suicide amongst military personnel was the highest ever, I believe my persistence was excellent!…

When I first joined the Army, my intent was never to stay in, as long as I have, let alone contemplate staying in until I retire. If my name is never remembered but my actions are inherited by future leaders, I would feel as though that my legacy has been left in history. To be able to emulate what CSM Bailey has taught me and continues to teach me as I move up in the ranks. To hopefully one day, I can do the same to junior Soldiers having the impact that years down the road they could look back to and know what to do. To be that coach and mentor that those under my command deserve to…

About half the people I had started with were gone. But I, the weakest of all of them made it to the finish line. My wings were pinned on my uniform, and I was so happy I could have screamed. I knew then that there was truly nothing in the world I couldn't accomplish if I wanted it bad enough. For me, this experience really showed me who I was and what I was made of. Nobody thought I was going to complete basic training to begin with, much less go airborne. It was an experience I will never forget and I can proudly stand here today and say that I am an airborne…
