Pathology Laboratory Study Disease
Pathology laboratories study disease. Diseases are mainly diagnosed through analysis of tissue, body fluid and cell samples. Pathology laboratories can also study the predicted or actual progression of particular diseases. Pathology is a field of general inquiry and research so addresses four components of disease. These components are cause, mechanisms of development, structural alterations of cells and the consequences of the changes. If a hospital sends off a sample to a pathology laboratory, when the laboratory has generated the results the results are confidential so only the person who generated the results and the consultant of the patient and their department head should know the results and then the patient when they have been told …show more content…
However, when the consultant gives the results to the patient, the results may be on paper. In the laboratory it would only be accessed when sending the results to the hospital and after that they would only be accessed if required. Haematology laboratories study, diagnose, treat and prevent diseases that are related to blood. It involves treating diseases that affect the production of blood and its components like blood proteins, blood cells, haemoglobin, blood vessels, bone marrow, platelets, the mechanism of coagulation and spleen. Haematologists also work with oncologists, who specialise in the medical treatment of cancer. If a hospital sends the bloodwork of a patient to a haematology laboratory, the sample will be tested on and then the results will be kept in the laboratory office stored on a computer. Only the management and the haematologist who tested the sample have access to the results. The results will then be sent to the correct department of the hospital and only the head of department and the consultant should have access to the …show more content…
When the results are at the hospital the results should only be accessed when being given to the patient and then if the patient needs to have more regular appointments. The laboratory should keep the results in case any mistakes have been made so they are there to be referred to. Biochemistry laboratories examine various chemical processes as they are found in living organisms. Some biochemistry labs focus on analysis of materials that have been requested, handling materials such as samples from patients with medical problems, evidence from crime scenes or DNA samples which need to be processed. If the work that the laboratory generates is not for a patient it is likely that it is non-confidential, which means that the laboratory may be able to generate a report and publish it. This would mean that the results can be accessed by anyone at any time. However, if the results are confidential it is likely that they will be kept on a computer in the laboratory office until they need to be sent back to the

Due to the error of incorrect labelled blood specimen it is the ethical responsibility of the emergency clinician to inform the injured patient. The consequences to the emergency department patient if the pathology scientist is instructed to undertake the blood cross-matching test with the first blood sample could result in possible fatality due to the time required to perform cross-matching. This consequence can be avoided by the manager of pathology, under of duty of care, recommending that due to the failure to label the specimen, protocols have to be followed as the patients’ wellbeing may be put at risk. Protocols under the ethic principle of non-maleficence (to do no harm) suggest the action which the manager believes would be most beneficial to the patient is to recommend a batch of uncrossed O blood be administered which is suitable for a larger percentage of people (ref). Ideally only type-specific blood products should be administered to minimize any adverse reactions, however this…
