Pathos In Advertising
Despite the constant and incredible exposure to it, the impact of advertising is often undermined and overlooked. Almost anywhere one can turn is an advertisement, sometimes subtle and other times completely blatant. The influence of advertisements varies depending on the mood attempting to be drawn from them in relation to the product. This is why many commercials can be incredibly controversial, attracting both negative and positive attention that can be remembered for years. However, aside from advertisements regarded only through nostalgia, the greatest impact stems from the evoked emotion – typically, the pathos. As this commercial originates in Thailand, it is not widely regarded across the world. To those who have watched and commented on it, however, …show more content…
With that said, this commercial's objective is to arouse the pathos of the audience. It is presented realistically, depicting a mute father and his teenage daughter in everyday scenarios. These scenarios are portrayed in between stressful events experienced by the girl, many of which occur as a result of her father’s disability. The overwhelming stress eventually brings her to attempt suicide, in which the most poignant scenes are shown. In these scenes, the father’s love for his daughter is further revealed as he is willing to sacrifice everything for her to live. Within many of these scenes, the individuals are shown to be crying in frustration, anguish or love jointed with relief. The exhibition of these emotions is primarily what is used to arouse the emotions of the audience. The advertisement ends with a slogan, name and logo, revealing it is a company’s life insurance commercial. This makes it clear as to what audience was targeted and why humor or anything else otherwise was not used. It does not disguise this fact or its objective, the narrator stating clearly at the commercial's conclusion to care for your loved ones. Again,

The producers of this commercial knew its target audience and went after it. It had a strong attention getter. Right from the beginning this commercial had my attention and maintained it throughout the entirety of the advertisement. It had strong appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos. This commercial worked for me, but for others I can see how this commercial came up short in getting their attention. For example, my views towards the music choice, the girl, and scenery corresponded well with what I wanted to see, but if you asked my mother about the commercial I’m sure there would be a completely different reaction to the commercial. In fact when I was watching the commercial in class in preparation for writing this analysis the girl who sits behind me watched the commercial over my shoulder and said that she thought the commercial was “ stupid”. It wasn’t until this moment that I realized the importance of pathos, ethos, and logos and how different each person’s appeals truly…

When creating advertisements, companies work hard to find a way to catch their viewers’ attentions. Whether it be by making a viewer laugh, cry, or even just by providing facts, the company always has a purpose in creating the advertisement. In a new commercial by Extra Gum, viewers’ emotions are on the rise, as the commercial illustrates a love story built on their gum wrappers. The company uses a dramatic tone, pathos, and repetition to emphasize the importance that their gum wrappers played in this story.…

The commercial follows a man, that slowly amassed a following of those that need help. The way I view the commercial, is the man isn’t being followed by an actual group of people but is being haunted by the thoughts of those in need. The commercial relies heavily on pathos, ethos, and logos; the use of melancholy music sets the tone of the whole commercial. Putting all this together, allows the viewer to realize what a difference one person can make if they see someone in need of help. This commercial was made to show the various issues in the world.…

Everyday, we see advertisements all around us. Weather we choose to look at them or not, they are there. Reading from the text, “Advertisings Fifteen Basic Appeals” by Jib Fowles, talks about how advertisements manipulate the public. I have chosen to pick five advertisements of my own and will describe them and see, in my opinion, if these advertisements do manipulate me in any way. But not only will I examine these and give my opinion, I will describe them and tell what need it is targeting to get our attention the most.…

All commercials appeal to a person using at least one of three ways: logos, pathos and ethos. When I think of an ad that displays pathos, I think of the disheartening commercial for the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). It is an advertisement that is on TV often whose purpose is getting its audience to support its cause through donations. Because the video shows such resilient emotional appeal, it more effectively targets women who tend to be more susceptible to sentimental propaganda than men. The video is saying that many animals have been helped, but more has to be done. There are still animals out there in need of being rescued from their abusive homes. More donations are needed. The…

This commercial demonstrates dedication, giving up one’s own time to better off a friend that they care about. In the video, nine normal men play wheelchair basketball with their friend who is disabled and cannot enjoy the same experiences they are able to. This is very powerful because you are able to extract the fact that there is not a shot these men would be playing like this if their other friend did not have the ability to walk. Using the rhetoric concept of pathos, the audience is drawn into a state of inspiration and feels what the disabled character has to go through. When they stop playing, the other nine men stand holding the door open for their friend and exit the gym. This makes the audience feel the entitlement of respect for the players who give up their legs just to make their buddy feel included. The disabled man is filled with joy that he has a group of friends who are willing to do anything to make him feel a part of something. This is shown by his positive body language and reactions. The end of the commercial is…

In the following essay, Jib Fowles looks at how advertisements work by examining the emotional, subrational appeals that they employ. We are confronted daily by hundreds of fads, only a few of which actually attract our attention. These few do so, according to Fowles, through "something primary and prim itive, an emotional appeal, that in effect is the thin edge of the wedge, trying to find its way into a mind." Drawing on research done by the psychologist Henry A. Murray, Fowles describes fifteen emotional appeals or wedges that advertisements exploit.…

The reason why I came up with such a topic with Apple’s ad campaign is that we are too familiar with Apple’s products to ignore it. From this perspective, analyzing a topic like this should be valuable. Today, everyone have their own feels about TV commercials, whether it’s good or not, whether it attracts your attention, whether you want to get it or not after watching the ad. Especially Apple’s commercials. For example, “Mac and PC” series, though they are always be argued by people even until today. They are great success which changed people’s opinion of computer to buy. However, not all Apple’s ads are great, like the one I analyzed below – the TV series played during London 2012, is a good example. I mainly discussed this ad in all 3 perspectives: Ethos, pathos and logos. I first give a background of it, how the ad looks like. Then I discuss it scene by scene, one character after another. Finally, I draw a conclusion that Apple should fix their campaign to keep leading in the US market.…
