In a new commercial by Extra Gum, viewers’ emotions are on the rise, as the commercial illustrates a love story built on their gum wrappers. The company uses a dramatic tone, pathos, and repetition to emphasize the importance that their gum wrappers played in this story. Throughout the commercial, the company is appealing to young couples. In the beginning of the commercial, the setting is at a high school. The producers of this commercial knew its target audience and went after it. It had a strong attention getter. Right from the beginning this commercial had my attention and maintained it throughout the entirety of the advertisement. It had strong appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos. This commercial worked for me, but for others I can see how this commercial came up short in getting their attention. For example, my views towards the music choice, the girl, and scenery corresponded well with what I wanted to see, but if you asked my mother about the commercial I’m sure there would be a completely different reaction to the commercial. In fact when I was watching the commercial in class in preparation for writing this analysis the girl who sits behind me watched the commercial over my shoulder and said that she thought the commercial was “ stupid”. It wasn’t until this moment that I realized the importance of pathos, ethos, and logos and how different each person’s appeals truly…

The producers chose to use vibrant colors throughout the ad to make the motion picture livelier. Although the actors are not famously known, they distract the audience with the humorous script. By having the father and his friends dance around in puffy dresses, they make themselves seem childish and more relatable to younger people. The text in this advertisement is kept to a minimal, so that it will not overpower the main visual aspect. Only the slogan is shown to emphasize the importance of what this ad is really about. Bright orange and white are against a striking black to make the logo really stand out. All of these notable elements immensely help towards making this commercial engaging to the…

The author established ethos in the commercial. In this commercial there is two scenes of the daughter as teenager. In all the scenes first to that the daughter usually accepted her father’s as origami. When she grows up, she ignores her father in the scenes. This gave the author a sense of realistic credibility. Most of the time fathers have no good relationship with their teen aged daughter. The audience were able to realize that and connect. It gave more belief in the commercial as if Extra Gum knew what it was talking about. The detail of place that the author select in every scene was can describe the ethos. The daughter was constantly aging through every transition of scenes, but her location was also changing. Even though the place varied…

Geico is a car insurance company which has used several advertising techniques that address many of the fifteen basic appeals, described by Jib Fowles, to gain potential customers (Fowles 1). For instance, the need for affiliation has been catered to through advertising depicting Geico as the best there is. People tend to affiliate themselves with top companies. Emotional appeal is catered to primarily; the premise being to invoke the idea that getting Geico insurance will make you happy. A series of “Happier Than” television advertisements were aired (Geico). Each episode portrays a random scenario, followed by two Bluegrass pickers named Ronny and Jimmy, performing a slapstick routine on a small stage. Each event leads to one picker asking a question along the line of, “How happy are people when they switch to Geico?” at which point the second picker delivers a punch line related to the content of the commercial (Geico). This method utilizes two distinct styles: humor and celebrity (Fowles 11). The approach relies heavily on implying that using Geico can make you as happy as someone else.…

The idea that their very loved pets need to be cared for properly prompts a consumer to provide for the pet, and storytelling is a great tool in making sure they remember exactly what brand they should be buying. This ad successfully elicits strong emotional pulls from the pet owner towards the pet, placing heavy value on the pet for the owner’s own happiness and peace. The brand will not soon be forgotten by a consumer, after such an emotion rich story, which is exactly the outcome an ad dreams of having. First I will conclude the primary appeal from Jib Fowls’s lists of appeals for this advertisement as the “need to satisfy curiosity.” Jib Fowls recognizes 15 basic appeals in his Article “Mass Advertising As Social Forecast.” This list contains various needs the marketers use to best sell their product. When I looked at the 5 Ascent Gum’s advertisement I was extremely curious what the flavor “wintermint” taste like. Next, they ask young girls the same thing. Their response was different; they start running as hard as they can, punching the air with great passion, and throwing the imaginary ball as far as they could. The screen then shows “When did doing something ‘like a girl’ become an insult?” The last half of this commercial shows the people that made fun of girls and how they realized what they did was wrong. The director asks them “So when they are in that vulnerable time between 10 and 12 how do you think that affects them?”…

    Meet Smiling Bob

The commercial starts off with a once popular catch phrase coined by Enzyte: “Meet Bob.” There is no mistaking that Bob is a happy man, given that throughout the commercial, his facial expression is occupied by a painfully awkward smile. As the audience is given a peek into Bob's life, it is apparent that his place of work is riddled with monotony and mindless routine. As the camera takes the audience from the elevator to Bob's cubical, coworkers seem to barely exist in their lackluster work environment. Everyone that he works with show little signs of emotion aside from disappointment, and envy when they gander into Bob's workspace. After a trip to Bob's work, the audience is then taken to Bob's neighborhood, which is seemingly reminiscent of 1960's style suburbia. Bob's neighbor is seen watering his garden, and after he sees how chipper Bob is, his hose goes limp (an obvious sexual innuendo). Finally, we meet Bob's wife; the only other person Bob’s utopic world that shows any emotion. Together, they are…

Leading the audience to realize what an impact “Like a Girl” can have on adolescent girls (Case study: Always #LikeAGirl). After watching what the young adults considered to be “Like a Girl” the commercial then shows little girls around the age of ten and what their response to what it is like to be a girl. All of the younger girls doing the task as intense as possible, they showed confidence and determination of what it is like to be "a girl". This part of the commercial pulls the audience in with a great amount of pathos. Without the heartfelt message, the commercial would be hardly popular. No one wants young girls to suffer or think of themselves as weak, or of any less worth than males. People are naturally react to their emotions above…
