The Patrick H. Brady Academy program is located on the grounds of the STAR academy in Southwestern South Dakota. The Brady Academy itself is a newly designed building to the rear of the main administration building for the campus. The living area is designed in a dormitory style, housing up to 48 young men (also called cadets) between the ages of 14 and 18.
The Patrick Henry Brady Academy program is designed to improve the quality of life for young men through a short-term comprehensive approach that includes counseling, education, life skills development, substance abuse services, and positive role modeling for participants. It is the goal of the Brady Academy to return to the community young men that are law abiding, respectful, healthy in mind and body, and motivated to succeed in whatever they set minds to.
The DOC has identified the major areas that are required to be a successful individual and is committed to assisting the students through:
• Instill and promote self-reliance, self-confidence, self-discipline, self-respect, respect for authority, respect for others, teamwork, skill acquisition, responsibility, and pride and accomplishments.
• Promote personal growth by developing a work ethic and acquiring personal hygiene habits and social skills.
• Enhancement of overall physical and mental wellness.
• Promote functional family discussion through continued family involvement.
• Develop the knowledge and skills to establish positive relationships.
• Recognize and develop empathy and compassion for others.
• Develop skills to meet their basic needs.
• Learn the skills required to succeed in the community
The Brady Academy serves young men that have exhausted all the resources in their communities or have committed crimes that necessitate them being removed from the community. They may have committed felony or misdemeanor offenses, violated their conditions of probation, have truancy or
