1. “Did people really do this? See somebody on the street and take her away, as if communicating with others of the human race were the simplest thing in the world?”
This quote explains well the assertion. It refers to how difficult can it be to Peggy to relate with others. This was when James’ aunt and his mother invited her to Charley’s for ice cream. Peggy did not know what to answer because she does not like socializing with others.
2. “My own sadness isn’t something I admit to people.”
This supports the assertion because it explains how difficult it is for Peggy to express her feelings to people. Also, we can say that Peggy is a reserved person who does not feel comfortable
when she is communicating with others.
Assertion #2: Peggy is lonely.
1.“I felt quite sure I would never hear an affectionate word from another human being in my life. Most days I spoke only to my library patrons, which is one reason I loved my work.”
Peggy said this when she was explaining how she did not talk to anyone after she graduated from college. This shows that Peggy is a lonely person who does not have too much people to talk to. She knew for sure that people would barely talk to her because she was a very lonely person.
2. “I see myself alone in the library, alone with the patrons. Pride does this.”
This example supports the assertion because Peggy, herself, says she sees herself alone. She sees herself alone with only the people from the library. Also, in this example we can see how she assures that the causing of lonely is pride. Maybe she sees herself as a pride person and starts to realize how her pride is affecting her social life.
