Abstract
Awareness of mental health has provided the world with imperative insight of people with mental illness. There are various types of mental illnesses prevalent in the United States. Technology has broadened the horizon of helping the emotional disturbed. In the past, people with mental illnesses were mistreated and frowned upon by society. Now, due to medication and therapy, the mentally ill can be productive citizens. Various methods of therapy have proven to prevent them from being institutionalized. Years of research and clinical studies enabled professionals to understand how mental illness affects adults and adolescents and how to treat this illness. Everyone that is connected to a mentally ill person can have a positive or negative impact on their improvement and ability to cope with such an increasingly growing illness.

A mental illness is a psychiatric disorder that results in a disruption in feeling, moods, the way a person thinks, and their ability to relate to others. Several regulations define serious mental illness as any diagnosable mental disorder that affects work, home or other areas of social functioning. Some would argue that mental disorders are caused by biochemical imbalances or genetic traits; others would assert that mental illness grows out of disturbed interpersonal relationships. Different disorders might have different causes, some biological in nature and others social.( Cockerham, 2000).
