Upon reading your definition of how Gilb defined “Pride” in his article, I have to agree that his use of stories and circumstances relating to everyday life, had a powerful meaning. I liked how you mentioned how you felt because of how Gilb described “Pride” by using the five senses and how this made you connect to his writing style. I see that as you look at your own life, that you have similar things make you proud in your life, that I can relate to myself. Having a job and working hard is a great source of pride. But you said it best when you stated how proud you are, by being accepted to Penn State, which is a very prestigious college. I would like to say that getting to know you in class these past few weeks has been a truly nice time,…

After dropping out at 15 years old, George played at several New York nightclubs and began his stint as a “song plugger” in New York’s Tin Pan Alley. After only 3 years of playing out tunes on the piano for his thrilling customers, he had completely transformed into a highly dexterous and skilled composer. To earn some extra cash, he worked as a rehearsal piano player for the Broadway singers. In 1916, George composed his first song, “When You Want ‘Em, You Can’t Get ‘Em; When You Have ‘Em, You Don’t Want…

The issue of Douglas Haig’s role as a general on the Western Front, during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, has been thoroughly questioned by many historians to date. Through different views and opinions, Haig’s skills have been both heavily celebrated and criticised. Therefore he has been viewed as both ‘Butcher of the Somme’ and the ‘Architect of Victory’, much evidence supporting both arguments. However the majority of people seem to favour the idea of Haig being a merciless leader, which is completely understandable. For instance, the Battle of the Somme hugely affected almost every person in Britain, many losing family members. For them, it would have been easy to blame the British losses solely on General Haig, and many did just that. However many people saw him as a highly gifted soldier and leader, and there was a good side to Haig, for example, he did manage to eventually wear down the German army, and played a part in the result of World War 1. Therefore this controversial issue will perhaps be continually debated.…

I’ve have been a big George Watsky fan ever since my junior year of high school when I started to get into performance poetry. When I found out that the famous Emerson alum was coming to back to school to perform a show, I booked the tickets immediately. The venue for the show was the Semel Theatre, a large black box theater with auditorium seating. As people shuffled in and waited, George was already sitting in the corner of the theatre, practicing and reciting his lines. This was representation of how the performance was going to be, well-rehearsed and prepared carefully and purposefully.…

The SVA Theatre was a project proposed to Milton Glaser, it was based on moving image. The image above is the start of the project. This image is made up of 3 sets of different lines which are all stripes, the blue lines are horizontal, the green lines are vertical and the red lines are diagonal. I think the lines used are similar to Paul Rand’s IBM logo, the horizontal lines in blue are the same lines used in Paul Rand’s IBM Logo, the lines are horizontal and have stripes, these are the most obvious similarities. I like this logo a lot more than the IBM logo this is because the SVA logo is much more diverse compared to the IBM logo, the lines go from being horizontal in the lower part of the logo then into green vertical lines in the center,…

The Westinghausen family tree stretches back to that of the ninth century in Westphalia, Germany. Some of the family decided to emigrate to Europe and later settle in the United States. In the nineteenth century, George Westinghouse decided to move all over the former United States and settled in Central Bridge, New York where he had George Westinghouse II. Born into a family of ten (which would become twelve later on) on October 16, 1846, George Westinghouse Jr. (son of George Westinghouse and Emmeline Vedder) was born into an agricultural family. George Jr.’s father moved the family to Schenectady to sell farming tools. After serving the Union Army for three years at the age of fifteen, George II (later to be referred to as just George) attended college for three months (dropping out because he believed that he could learn much more about machinery on his own). During his three-month stay however, George had obtained a patent for a rotary steam engine (which he received in 1865).…
