Performance Arts Final Reflection

For the past few weeks in Performance Arts Class, we have worked on choreography pieces created by different people in the class. Each person in the class was given the chance to be a choreographer. The choreographers would choose other students to act as performers in their dance. The choreographers would choose the performers based on the movement styles they had shown in previous classes. Not only were the students choreographing their own dances, but they were also performing in an average of three other dances. In this amazing experience, we were given the opportunity to put our creative and expressive qualities into our dance and those of our classmates. In this experience, I performed in three dances and was able to choreograph a dance with two of my classmates. I was able to use all of the different things I learned throughout the year in these pieces. I was able to see how I improved in being both a choreographer and a performer. I also learned about my abilities, while I worked in both of these roles, and how I

By experiencing with different styles of movement I was able to find that I am more of a contemporary and classical dancer. This information is important, because it enables me to create movement pieces with the knowledge of what I am good at and what I like to do. Even though I am glad to know this, it will not keep me away from trying different and new styles of dance. My abilities in the contemporary area, I think are better because of the amount of practice and work I have put into this style of dance. I feel my abilities in the other styles of dance are not as good, but in the learning and nurturing environment at Leahurst, I feel that I am able to try any style of dance no matter my abilities. In this class, I feel comfortable to try new styles and I know I will not be judged. I hope that I can make others in my class feel the same

In the piece we listened to for this assignment, there are multiple instruments making the sound. Each of them is making a different sound and then when the all come together we get an even better and enjoyable sound. There is the Piano, Violin, cello, flute, and Tuba in this piece of music from what I could see. The mood for this piece to me was calming and peaceful, at certain parts it became more uplifting but for the majority it was slow and calm. This performance was great to listen to while I studied because of its calming nature.…

They are also inconceivably involved in the development of making the production more aesthetically pleasing, often consulting with the Chief Administrative Officer. Sometimes these two roles are combined into one.…

“Technique” was the topic of discussion in this article. “What is technique?” was the question that was asked throughout different interviews conducted. “Technique is being able to exemplify a move with perfection; correct posture, correct rhythm, correct movements for which ever genre of dance you prefer” is my opinion. The argument about technique originating from ballet and modern is true when it comes to certain styles of dance. When it comes to dance styles such as hip hop, jazz, and salsa, ballet isn’t too much of a skill needed. When it boils down to what is acceptable to be taught in universities, the unrelated ballet dance styles are frowned upon and looked at as social dances; “everyone can do it”. People feel that because these dances are practiced in other places other than a dance room or theater, that these are dances that do not require technique. These types of dances are usually practiced in nightclubs, parties, and social dance battles. “Rhythmic music is important. It’s at all functions in African American culture.” It is time to stop being so stereotypical and accept all forms of dance as an art and talent. We have to stop basing technical…

“Audiences today want a real experience in their live performance, because they can get great script based entertainment at home, through various new media sources. Traditional theatre, which appeals on a mental, and hopefully also emotional level, has not been enough to compete with other media, and audiences have been declining. Physical theatre, by contrast appeals to the audience on a physical and emotional level, providing a much more immediate experience than traditional theatre” ~ (Artmedia Publishing in Zen Zen Zo’s “The Tempest” Teacher’s Notes)…

On February 19, 2015, Jared Blum at the Sacramento State University had his first concert of the spring semester featuring plenty of special guests. This concert was presented as partial fulfillment of the requirements that he needs for his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies. Jared Blum, with his special guests (Megan Spurlock on the clarinet, Morgan Childres on the trombone, the Jazz Combo, the Jazz Essemble, and other special guests), collectively performed nine pieces along with a medley that compromised of three songs at the concert. Prior to taking this course, one of the first questions that I asked myself was “what do I know about jazz?” I have always consociated jazz music with the African American culture, mainly because of the general idea of how jazz music can give off a “bluesy” rhythm. Little did I know how diverse jazz music can be. “Creole Belles”, “Creep”, and the medley that compromised of “When you’re smiling”, “Swing that music”, and “Shiek of Araby” are the pieces that allowed the audience, including myself, to experience the diversity of jazz music.…

When you go to a movie theater you see all kinds of different people. Whether or not it females or males, young or old, American or non-American. There are different perspectives in which the movie will be seen. I think a good example would be the movie 2012. It is a science fiction disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich and distributed by Columbia Pictures. 2012 was a global film that all people were interested to see. This movie came out in 2009 and when it was in the making in 2008, all of my friends were already talking about the movie but what really surprised me were the reasons that they were going to see the movie for. Benjamin Trujillo’s, a family friend, reason to go see the movie was so that his wife and kids can see the way the world is going to end if they don’t behave according to the bible. Benjamin grew up as a very potent Christian and his wife was not that very religious so therefore he…

    Perfectionism In Dance

When I turned three, my mom signed me up for my first ballet class, and I loved it. Moving along to the music brought me joy and fulfillment. My liking for it has gradually grown into a passion. But over the years, I have also noticed a stigma for extreme competitiveness and perfectionism. Something that originally began as a form of worship has transformed into a celebration of the superficial and frivolous. Dancing often creates many concerns for young performers.…

I have been in many discourse communities where member share their ideas and what they have learned. Once I had a dream to become a professional dancer. I was introduced to dancing when I was six years of age, and I fell in love with dancing ever since. I used to watch Bollywood movies which is known for songs and dances and I was mesmerized by their out of the world choreography. They looked so lively, and it felt like they use the body movements to express the world in a very enticing way. I joined the dance class during my freshmen year thinking all I will have to learn is movements like Bollywood dances from the teacher. Although, high school dance was more like learning the movement terms in words, bringing it to real life in action and most of the time performing. For that to happen, I needed to be in a good shape with my classmates so I can receive their help but it was not like that in this case. Being an immigrant from Nepal with limited English was challenging…

    Choreographic Manifesto

I have been doing dance for a very long time and it took me a year here at Southern to figure out that I wanted to commit to it, but it’s what I love to do on a daily bases. In the last year and half of being a dance major I have realized that my choreographic thoughts are a like that of my wardrobe. For example one day I want to wear something of the cowgirl in me, some days I want to wear longs flowing skirts and go for the hippie/gypsy in me. When I start to choreograph I like to think to myself and say,” What have I never seen before?” within the dance department that is. I definitely like watching unique and weirdly, original things that are projected onto the stage. I enjoy not knowing what people are going to create next when I know it’s going to be good and completely different from their last. I do feel strongly that I will have a small structure in starting out my choreography, such as knowing that I need to have an ariel section, floor section, minimal, or taking a phrase of mine and knowing I want to device it somehow. I do like structure, but I also do not what that to hold me back. I like that some dances are from experience, I think it’s a strong way of grabbing an audience’s attention when you can relate it to them. Then again, I also like the weird, unexpected pieces that when you look at it all you want to say is,”That art!” I feel like I have a pretty good idea of how to keep myself balance as far as spacing, music, and using time, so those I haven’t really thought much about as far as choreographically. Overall when I choreograph, I want people to question who choreographed this and be surprised when they hear it was me. Now I know that probably won’t happen right away or even happen a whole lot, but that is the goal I have for my pieces. I think whatever mood I am in, in that period of time could affect which direction my choreography will go or if there was something I experienced along the way that I am…

Prior to this year, I had never had the opportunity to attend a musical theatre master class. On the other hand, I am extremely accustomed to dancer master classes and I found it interesting to compare and contrast the way classes are held. Each Friday the dancer department takes a master class with a different professional dancer. Besides the specific dance genre, the classes possess numerous similarities to each other. This was not the case for the two musical theatre master classes I attended this year. I found it intriguing that each teacher chose a different structure the their class. Upon attending John Bucchino’s master class, I was introduced to an immense amount of new facts. I found it interesting that each performer was to perform one of his pieces. It was nice to see everyone’s different perspective of the pieces and it was even nicer to hear his feedback on how his own pieces were performed. Throughout both master classes I attended this year, I am always very impressed by the students ability to adapt and adjust to what the teachers are suggesting. I felt that this was extremely evident during Bucchino’s class. It was nice to see the students appreciate and…

Growing up, I’ve always wanted to dance, I’ve dance when I was little for about a year and that was it. And through dancing, I’ve grown to also love to learn how to do little “tricks” with my body. However, I was not able to do much with this interest or passion because of limited opportunities. Now that I am in college, I feel freer and more independent. I am currently signed up to perform a traditional dance with HMSA for their heritage event and is also participating in the gymnastics club. However, college is hard and requires a lot of my time so that has also limited my commitment and to the club, and participation. Despite that, I am glad that I found something that I love and can do in the…

My personal feelings of ballet are that it is so extremely important to every dancers training. It develops discipline and dedication: ballet technique is very detailed and requires practice to improve. Let’s face it; everything in ballet requires good posture. In time, the posture is utilized in the studio and translates to every part of a dancer's life. Two large parts of ballet technique which, as a result, diminish the likelihood of injury in ballet, sports, and other dance forms. Though often slow and graceful, ballet has many jumping exercises which people need to maintain agility. You learn to connect verbal commands and musical cues with exercise demonstrations and perform them in your body. Different parts of the brain are problem solving to perform the movements in time with the music. One of my friends has taken modern dance classes ever since she has started ballet. At her dance school, to attend modern dance classes, they have to take weekly ballet classes so we have the correct technique’s they need.…
