Performance of 3D Printed Models as a Means for Spatial Engineering Information Visualization
Abstract: Engineering information delivery can be a source of inefficient communication of design, leading to construction rework and lower worker morale. Due to errors, omissions, and misinterpretations, there remains a great opportunity to improve the traditional documentation of engineering information that craft professionals use to complete their work. Historically, physical three dimensional (3D) models built by hand provided 3D physical representations of the project to assist in sequencing, visualization, and planning of critical construction activities. This practice has greatly diminished since the adoption of three dimensional CAD (computer-aided design) and BIM (building information modeling) technologies. Recently, additive manufacturing technologies have allowed for three dimensional printing of 3D CAD models. By applying a cognitive based study to various information delivery formats (2D drawings, a 3D computer interface, and a 3D printed model), the effectiveness of the formats in delivering engineering information to an end-user are scientifically measured. The 3D printed model outperformed the 2D drawings and 3D computer interface in both simulated productivity and cognitive workload measures. This paper’s primary contribution to the body of knowledge is identification of how different mediums of engineering information influence the performance of construction task execution.

INTRODUCTION
While the construction industry comprises 5.4% of the overall U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2013 and Huesman et al., 2013), it lags the rest of the economy in terms of productivity measurement and improvement (Goodrum et al., 2002b). Due to changes in real output and differences in accounting procedures, there is no industry level measure of productivity (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012). The Bureau of Labor Statistics

In order to use CAD effectively as a design tool, the designer must have the skills necessary to create, edit, and manipulate a 3D model of a part in order to create a realistic representation of an imagined object. In this activity you will build on the CAD skills that you learned in Activity 5.2b Introduction to CAD Skills. You will learn about and use additional tools and features available in most CAD programs and apply your new CAD skills to the creation of more complex parts that will be used in later activities (as components in the assembly of parts) to create complete products (including a complete Automoblox vehicle and a Button Maker machine).…

The recent events in the economy have increase globalization. Globalization is the activity between the world 's markets and businesses (Colander, 2010). This activity allows for import and export of goods between countries. This has been a new trend in the construction industry due to the fact that traveling abroad, shipping and receiving, and communication is easier than years ago. Globalization allows the construction companies to seek decrease prices from imports on some raw materials, resulting in passing the savings to the consumer.…

In the world of construction, material, labor, equipment, time and money are some of the most important factors. A speedy well planned site could decrease the construction cost drastically. Up until 1971, there was no way to use a computer and all site drawings had to be done in hand. This was very time consuming and would usually delay the rest of the construction process. During that year, a program was developed, CORELAP was one of the first site layout applications for the computer but still had its faults. Other tools for the computer were designed but most had major faults and none gained wide acceptance by the civil engineering industry. But by 1987, AutoCAD was developed and sold to computers everywhere. (Sadeghpour, Moseli & Alkass, 2006)…
