The NBC Video suggests that teens who receive guidance from parents are also twice as likely to wear seat belts, 70% less likely to drink and drive, and 30% less likely to use cell phones, while driving! While Permissive Parenting results in aggressive youth, and neglectful parents who are uninvolved create adolescence who have behavior disorders, if you should adopt the highly suggested Authoritative Parenting Style, your children will most likely cope well with stress while on the road, and exhibit more cheerful and friendly behavior, while enjoying the privilege of driving.
It is also important to keep in mind that children learn through modeling their parents. According to Exploring Lifespan Development, social learning theorists believe that children learn to behave morally largely through modeling- observing and imitating people who demonstrate appropriate behavior, so to increase cooperation, parents should also follow their own guidelines themselves (Berk, pg 207, 2010).
To summarize, if you’d like to worry just a little less about your new to the road driver, and possibly reduce the chances of your adolescent being involved in an automobile accident, fostering an Authoritative Parenting Style is by far, the best way to go. Creating a loving and warm relationship with your child, and setting clear rules and expectations, will most likely get them home
