The refugees no longer have their farms and homes, and because of that they will not have a easy time if they decide to leave the refugee camp, so they stay. (STEWE-2) Najmah experienced the loss of a home firsthand when the Americans bombed it, “I run then toward home, but I recognize nothing. A few timbers stand where our house was just moments before” (Staples 66). Najmah’s family and house were destroyed by a bombing that the Americans carried out to take out Taliban members, she now has no home and no safe place to stay. Even if she wanted to stay at her farm, she would have a very hard time surviving. (SIP-A) Many characters lost opportunities to better their lives due to the war. (STEWE-1) Nusrat lost opportunities when she and Faiz decided to go to Afghanistan, “‘It’s the whole country. I feel helpless, and at the same time I know that I could help’” (Staples 95). The war caused Faiz to want to come to Afghanistan, therefore Nusrat and Faiz lost the opportunity to live in America in peace, not worried about one and other. (STEWE-2) Najmah lost opportunities because of the bombing at her house, “I have named my unborn brother Habib, which means ‘beloved friend’ I know Habib will be my friend, unlike Nur, who teases me mercilessly” (Staples 4). The bombing that killed Habib caused her to lose the opportunity of raising and growing up with her little brother. (SIP-B) The war also gave characters opportunities to better their lives. (STEWE-1) Both Najmah and Nusrat gained opportunities due to the war, “She is not surprised to see Haroon outside the garden wall, and standing beside him a tall, slender boy with watchful eyes” (Staples 187). Nusrat coming to Afghanistan with Faiz to help with the injured from the war, caused Nusrat and Najmah to meet and become friends.
