Personal Essay: Defensive Driving School

I, Courtney have been working for the Defensive Driving School for teens for 20 years; because of my occupation, I know common mistakes teenagers make while driving. Common mistakes that I’ve seen are, improper lane changing, changing lanes in an intersection, lack of steering control, and distracted driving. Since I see these mistakes daily, I try to avoid these things to stay out of accidents. On October 29th, I was leaving Chick fil a from picking up my late lunch, it was around two o’clock in the afternoon. After I pulled out of the parking lot a red dodge ram pulled out behind me. Before I knew it, I saw the accident unfold before my eyes. In my professional opinion, I appeared that Tom was distracted by his passenger. Kay was
on the inside lane going South bound, Tom pulled into the turning lane, where Kay struck him; however, I believe if Tom would have waited until Kay moved the accident could have been avoided. Also, it could be been difficult for Tom to see Kays car. Kay drives a Honda Ridgeline, which is a smaller car. If you’ve ever driven an early model of a dodge ram such as a 2000, (Toms vehicle) you would know that they have a significant number of blind spots. Toms truck is also red and much more noticeable. It has been proven that police officers pull over red vehicles more than any other color, therefore Kay would have seen Toms truck before he would of saw her. Statistics show that male drivers are typically more reckless drivers than females also it is proven that men are involved in 57% of accidents, where women are only involved in 44% of accidents. Studies have shown the reason behind this is because men are more reckless and are more aggressive drivers.
