At the beginning of the semester I would have never thought that I would learn as much has I have about the different diversity groups we have in this country. There are many things we talked about this semester that I have never even heard of before. Coming to the end of this semester I can say that I have learned so much and have a completely new understanding of prejudice on the different diversity groups we have in the US. When we first started the semester we began by talking about definition of race, ethnicity, and discrimination. Going in I thought I knew about everything there was to know about this subject but it turned out there was a lot that I didn’t know. This subject was such an important beginning to our year because all three of those things relate to everything we talked about all year. You have to have a definite understanding of race, ethnicity, and discrimination before you can go into understanding the different types of diversity groups and how all those things relate to everything we talked about. Our next subject to discuss was cultural competence and psychological trauma. This is also very important because you need to have an understanding of these two before trying to help people of different cultural. Everyone has different ways of dealing with everything, and you have to make sure you respect that. When talking about this subject I received a whole new set of things to consider when helping people of different cultures. I have worked with people of different cultures my whole life teaching swim lessons and looking back I saw some things that I did right and some things I definitely could have done better. Now I know going into a profession where all I’m going to be doing is helping people of different cultures I have a better understanding of how I can help them to the best of my ability. Understanding psychological trauma is also very important because you never know what a person may have gone
