Personal Leadership Application
Throughout my journey in life I, like many others, mistakenly assumed that the act of being a leader could be pulled off with a positive attitude, effort, a to-do list and a little bravado. However, Two experiences during High school swiftly proved me wrong and would forever shape the way that I view leadership and myself as a person. The thought of the debt associated with pursuing postsecondary education prompted me to form an organization dedicated to giving students an edge in the application process of scholarships. After a few weeks of spreading the word, I was joined by friends and like-minded individuals. My initial ambitions for the group were ineffective and seemed to be unaligned with the individual interest. As a result, I began to consciously make the effort to listen and adjust to the wants and needs of others. Through listening, I learned that the group’s collective thought process assumed that academic merit alone determined a student’s scholarship potential and chances of being accepted. Beyond listening, I searched for some way to offer value and benefit the group. As a result, I began to notice that even the most rigorous academic students lacked community service. My proposed was the Summer Reading Program that our local library held every year. …show more content…
This year was beyond challenging. For, it was my first year of leadership and having to do so on both a micro and macro level. A lack of focus and clash of personal interest was holding the band back from gaining the competitive edge it needed over other successful programs. Acknowledging my many other shortcomings as a leader, I used my strength of listening to personally associate every individual member need and their unique role in helping the collective. When one thinks of a leader, what type of person do we think of? Is that individual a hero that we see on television, a cartoon character, a family member, or is that person a public servant? Regardless of occupation and title, a leader is a person who inspires others and they know how to motivate people. “When they arrive, you see something about them that stands out. The inner strength of their leadership ability emerges”. (Gonzalez, 2007, February 1). My definition of leadership changed significantly while completing this course. Originally if you would have asked me what my definition of leadership was, I probably would have said someone who takes charge and shows a group of people what to do and how to do something. But this is just one way to be a leader. This course has taught me that being a leader doesn’t mean being loud and forceful when leading. Being a leader means using your power and knowledge of a subject or action to bring a group of people together to achieve a common goal. It takes knowing the end that the group wants to reach and helping to lead each person in the right direction. Leadership involves guiding and taking responsibility for the actions of you and the people you are leading. It doesn’t have to be forceful and it doesn’t have to be intentional. A person can be a leader to others without even knowing it. This course has taught me that there are many different types of leaders out there and anyone can be a leader if they want.…

Personal Assessment and Leadership Development Plan Introduction The focus of my personal assessment and leadership development plan is to denote the values, beliefs, thoughts, and actions that will propel me into a state of personal fulfillment as a more complete leader at home, in the workplace, and in the community. The preparation of this document will result in the creation of a deliverable to be frequently referenced and used as a reminder of the overall direction and more specific strategies to achieve my personal and professional hopes, dreams, and aspirations, as well as put into place a foundation for facilitating leadership development in my communities. My more immediate aspirations include being promoted at the California Department of Education (CDE) and aiding others in finding their financial independence, while my long term goals are to become an elected official, create policy, and serve my community in a manner that inspires others to serve their communities as well. This plan incorporates my total leadership experiments as opportunities to overcome areas of concern and become a more holistically empowered leader. These areas of concern are time management and organization and education policy knowledge and skills. Knowledge gained, self assessment, and discussion of experiences While I have always seen myself as an introvert, a variety of data stemming from assessment results and feedback from others have resulted in my reconsideration of my identity. When identifying my core leadership value of shared identity, I realized that being an extrovert was an integral part of operationalizing that value. The implied moral and normative aspects that oblige a person to treat others as fellow human beings and equals requires interaction with others. This results in a genuine, people‐centered orientation where people engage in service of others around them and are committed to their communities. Among friends, one must be an…
