my cheerleading history and how it explains the meanings of the different sections of my personal learning style. While constructing this essay, I hope that I will learn a more meaningful explanation for my personal learning style, along with creating a universal lesson that others can learn.
To begin, as a result of the personality test, I received the letter E, which is described as extraversion, or outward turning.
When a person acquires the letter E, their interest is most present when dealing with the outer world of actions, objects, and persons. Also, another form of the word extraversion is extravert. An extravert is an outgoing, overtly expressive person. When I added the position of cheerleading captain to my personal life, I knew that I needed to become a leader for the squad. In my opinion, a leader needs possess and outgoing demeanor in order to assume control and responsibility in different situations. I found out that leading a group of sixteen (16) high school girls was very complicated and my extraverted personality helped me lead them properly. For example, during a summer practice, four (4) cheerleaders were on their cell phones, which was strictly prohibited during practice hours. Due to the violation of the rules, the entire cheer squad was required to complete “suicides” in the gym, which is a form of exercise. After our punishment was complete, I forced the cheerleaders to power their phones off and keep them inside of a bag, out of reach. If I had an introverted personality, I believe that it would not have been as simple to punish the members of the high school cheerleading squad. I would have been to shy to speak up. A lesson that can be taken from this specific example is as follows: in order to be a successful leader or role model, an extraverted personality type will make the experience(s) easier. This specific personality will help a leader communicate better with a group of people, which will lead to an overall better connection. Therefore, I believe the letter E is most fitting to my personal learning
type.
In addition to the letter E, I also received the letter N, which stand for intuition. When someone possesses the letter N as a part of their personality type, the “bigger picture” is noticed more than the observations and little details that can be gathered. People who are intuitive pay attention to the hidden meanings. Although I tested to only prefer intuitive instincts over sensible/observant instincts slightly, I believe that I use my intuition often, especially when it came to leading the cheerleading squad. For example, during the course of the season, many of the cheerleaders experienced emotional breakdowns, myself included. Due to my experience with unpredictable emotional stress, I used my intuition to help the members whenever they were struggling. Most of the time, the affected persons did not openly admit to being upset, but I always had a “gut-feeling” that something important was happening in their lives. A lesson that can be taken from this specific example is as follows: although it is important to observe the little things within a certain situation, use intuition to help others. Do not wait for specific signs from a person. Use a “gut-feeling” to help someone instead of them waiting and approaching a problem alone. In conclusion, I believe that the letter N represents who I am as a person well.
Next, while taking and completing my Myers-Briggs personality test, I also received the letter F, which can be defined as feeling. When a person is described with the letter F, they tend to care about what others think of them and weigh the values and effects of their preferred choices. If any of the qualities that I received during my personal learning type test are true, it would be this one. I care about what others think of me and I always contemplate my decisions carefully. When applying this trait to cheerleading, I am able to provide an accurate situation. For example, due to the fact that I am very worried when it pertains to others opinions, I, sometimes, was afraid to yell or raise my voice when talking to the cheerleaders. I understand that as captain, it was my responsibility to enforce the rules and assume responsibility for the group as a whole, but I built friendships with the girls as well and I did not want them to dislike me because of how I treated them. This trait then led me to believe that I was making the wrong decision. I know that a leader usually should not care about what is best for them personally, but what is best for the group as a whole, but I couldn’t help it. It is how I think and act because it is a part of my personality. A lesson that can be taken from this specific example is as follows: This part of a personality type can be both rewarding and unsatisfactory. First, it can be rewarding because it keeps a person humble. Caring about what others think can motivate a person to be other best version of themselves. On the contrary, it can be unsatisfactory because it can keep a person from choosing the right decision, It can stop a person from choosing the best decision for themselves, or for a group. For this reason, I believe that the letter F, out of all the letters, describes me as a person the most accurately.
Finally, the last letter I received was a P, which stands for perceiving. People with a preference of perceiving over judging tend to live spontaneously and are able to adapt to changes during their everyday life, while generally trying to understand daily happenings. Although I do make planned schedules for myself, I am able to adjust my plans. When applying cheerleading to this aspect of my life, a certain example is present. During school, I was informed that a pep assembly was scheduled and the school district forgot to inform the cheerleaders about it. We had nothing planned for the event and we had no uniform at the school to wear. I was able to figure out a solution to the problem. As a squad, we held a practice during school hours and were able to all choose an outfit and receive it by the time the pep assembly started.
