Personal Narrative: A Career In Construction
In high school I was always a negative person, from rolling my eyes when assignments were given to signing at the sight of something I loathed. Construction is a difficult job and I had a lot to prove considering I was only thirteen; I couldn’t complain or I wouldn’t work for them anymore. At first, I was irritated that I had to work and I swore my mom was only doing this to vex. I procrastinate on most of my work, and sometimes I just don’t want to do the work. Right now I’m rank 14 in my class but I could’ve been higher if I had any drive my freshman year. I don’t think about how my decisions now will impact me later and when I do, I don’t really care. I also don’t have much motivation to do things in sports activities. Last year I played volleyball and I never had that much playing time. Never being able…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…

I first began looking at colleges my freshman year of high school. First, I looked up schools I thought seemed interesting and had majors I thought I may want to develop and pursue a career in. My list started off with about 20 schools and by sophomore year I would need to break it down to about 10. I began to visit these schools 1 by 1 and saw the type of programs they had to offer. I began at colleges such as Wake Forest, Clemson, and University of Tennessee at Knoxville. But I could tell that these schools just weren’t for me. My mother became fed up because I did not find interest in the schools I thought I would fall in love with.…

This week reminded me how amazing and important my job is. Friday was a busy day at the office; I was rushing to finish my work so I could leave on time. As I was about to leave I received a phone call from a hiring manager (Mark) with NOAA. Mark had questions about the interview process and was calling to speak to one of my colleagues. Unfortunately, my colleague was on vacation and wouldn’t be back for another week. I looked at the clock and realized it was time to go but I could hear the frustration in Mark’s voice. Instead of leaving, I spent almost an hour listening to Mark’s concerns, answering his questions, and I explained how the federal hiring process works. At the end of our conversation, Mark thanked me for my time and he told me…

My mom taught me to live by the Golden Rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I have lived by this rule all my life. I have never had a problem getting along with others and treating them with respect until I started my nursing career as an LPN. I started working at the local hospital, working night shift. I really enjoyed going into work, helping the patients with their needs. I enjoyed visiting with them and finding out what would make their stay better. Then one day the supervising nurse in charge of the floor took me aside and told me to stop visiting with the patients. I was thinking to myself okay there has got to be a good reason behind this. She told me the patients need their sleep and they don’t need me to visit with them and keep them awake.…
