Personal Narrative: Castellanos
“When I was ten years old, my brother Miguel came back from the U.S. to visit us. When he was ready to leave, he told my mom, ‘Hey, are you going to let Kiko (which was my nickname) come to the U.S., so he can go to school and have an opportunity?’ and my mom turned to me and said, ‘Do you want to go with him?’ Then I looked at her and replied, ‘Do you want me to go?’ and she nodded in approval, so I went into the house, got a backpack, and put three pants, three shirts, and a few other things in there because I didn’t have many belongings. I then went back outside, jumped into the car, and left my mom. I didn’t see my mom again until I was a senior in high school, and a lot took place during those years” (Castellanos). Living only with his older brother Miguel, he seemed like the typical straight-A student. He participated in band, the debate team, spelling bees, sports, and theatrical plays; he received many academic awards, and he was the Valedictorian of his class. However, growing up without parents made him the subject of curiousity among his friends. “They would always ask me, ‘Hey, where are your parents at? Why are you not living with them?’ It would always be difficult telling them how my mom stayed in Mexico to care for my family and how my father lost his job in the U.S. and was forced to move back to Mexico. I just thought it was normal up until that point in time” (Castellanos). Despite not having parents around, Francisco still did well in school. He used these extra-curricular activities to occupy his time and stay off the streets. “I found my escape through academics and school activities,” he said. “It was great, but at the same time, it was tough because no one was there to watch me win all those awards. At these events, I was taking pictures with my friends and their families, instead of my own” (Castellanos). It would seem he would have promising future after

One of Miguel’s biggest rewards of immigrating to the U.S. is the opportunity for higher education, he said that if he was still back in Mexico attending college would not have happened. Being able to attend college has allowed Miguel to find a better paying job which is another reward of living in the U.S. because a good paying job is also hard to come by in Mexico. Another reward of living in the U.S. is being able live in a better and safer environment that has given Miguel’s parents the opportunity to own their own home and have good…

I went to a busy restaurant called JJ Chagos. The first person I chose was a younger lady with short brown hair. She was wearing a light maroon blouse with a grey cardigan and black leggings with flats; she also had her nails done. She had a coffee and ate a croissant very lady like. I classified her as a lower upper or upper middle class person. The second person I chose was a younger man with short brown hair. He was wearing a FSU sweatshirt, blue jeans, and Nike shoes. He was drinking a water and eating scrambled eggs and a bagel. I classified him as a middle class person. The third person I chose was an older man with a bald head and a huge beard. He was wearing glasses, a black t-shirt, and blue jeans. He had a big belly and a tattoo…

Her father was a world war 2 veteran who loved to travel, so their family traveled a lot. One of her favorite trips that she would go on was to Tijuana, Mexico to visit with her aunt Joan and uncle Juan at the orphanage. Her family would also take some of the kids back to Holland with them for a month or so at a time to let them see what America was like. The boys names were Pepe, Ramon, Christian, Antonio, Pablo, and Danny. Her Aunt Joan picked which boys she thought would be the best for traveling to the United states. Before they came Joan made a cassette tape recording of some basic Spanish to English translated words. The boys were taken to the beach to see Lake Michigan, local parks to play on the playgrounds, and a cottage on an inland lake were they went boating and fishing. In the winter the boys went sledding and even got to sled behind my grandpa's car through the neighborhood. They enjoyed taking the boys shopping and buying them clothes and toys for their time in America. She said how the kids were so amazed to even see grass in the lawns because where they were from it was mostly gravel and dirt. The kids were also amazed to experience what snow was like because they had never seen a real winter before. The boys had so many questions and things to say about America. Most of them were around the ages of 4-12 and had never really known who their parents were. Now, after more than…

In the story, the author is getting pulled in various directions. Rodriguez wants to stay true to his Mexican culture for his parents' sake claiming they, “...grow distant, apart, no longer speak,” but also wants to belong in American culture where his education has driven him to a position not many Mexicans get to or have to opportunity to be (Rodriguez 105). This story confronts the idea that anyone can succeed as long as they are willing to sacrifice their cultural identity in the process.…

What is a legacy? Lin Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton described it as “planting seeds in a garden you never get to see”. In a similar way, the Broadway musical, In The Heights, sings about continuing what is passed down to you because one day it may be gone. One song in particular titled, “Paciencia y Fe” inspires me to work as hard as I can just like Abuela Claudia did when she immigrated from Cuba. The Broadway hits’ harmonies and melodies have instilled in me a sense of hope for the future, where I can continue a family legacy.…

I came to the United States from Colombia when I was just 3 years old. I was brought into the country of bright opportunities because like every other parent, my mother and father wanted what was best for me. My mother had to give up her dream job in Colombia, which was being an accountant for an essentially important company, in order to facilitate my well-being and open up the doors for my future. As the years progressed, I began to acquire both languages, English and Spanish, but there was a point where I became tongue tied and had to assist in speech therapy. My parents would talk to me in Spanish at home but in school all I would hear was English, my mind was extremely confused to the point that I made my own language by using both tongues in one sentence.…

As I heard Montresor calling my name I stayed silent in the pitch black darkness of this trap.Still yearning for the Amontillado that I was deprived and tricked into thinking was in this cellar I waited until I thought he was far long gone into the chambers I started to look around as my eyes started to adjust to the darkness of the cellar in which I was fettered.I saw a key it was far out of my reach but if I stretched as far as I could I would be able to reach it.Since Montresor only put the chain around my waist my leg were free to roam as far as the could possibly go.I managed with great struggle to pick the key up with my feet and then my hands and I successfully unlocked the chain from my waist and was as free as a trapped man could…

Rodriguez faces a few tensions in his personal experience such as being a "scholarship boy" as oppose to a well rounded student and and his life at home compared to a more friendly home environment. Rodriguez says that "I was a very good student, I was a also a very bad student. I was a scholarship boy, a certain kind of scholarship boy. Always successful, I was always unconfident. Exhilarated by my progress. Sad. I became the prized student - anxious and eager to learn. Too eager, too anxious - an imitative and unoriginal pupil." ( Rodrigues #283 ) Rodriguez describes himself here as imitating his teachers too much and being a perfect student instead of thinking for himself and taking in the knowledge he is given by his teachers and analyzing it and putting it to use. He is unoriginal and and uninteresting compared to a student who can use their knowledge in their own way and gets more involved. The other tension Rodriguez faces his the tension he has with his family, mostly his mother and father. At home his mother and father both support and encourage what he is doing very much but they didn't like the fact that he would always be in his room and the fact that the only thing he was involved with was school. "He permits himself embarrassment at their lack of education." (Rodriguez #286) This quote shows that Rodriguez's amount of knowledge of the english language and other subjects he had compared to his parents and therefore he was somewhat embarrassed by them and it created a tough home environment to live in because he didn't communicate much with his parents. This contrasts the home environment where their is a strong relationship between the family and their is communication.…

The line sounded rehearsed, as if he had spoken these words multiple times a day for many years. His glossy brown eyes penetrated my startled blue ones for as long as I let them until I turned away. His dirtied innocent face was one that came straight out of a UNICEF commercial, the sort that caught you off guard during a commercial break of your favorite TV show. Wistful faces of impoverished children flick before your eyes as a concerned voice insists that if you donate your unused pocket change every month, you could support the life of this poor boy.…
