Personal Narrative: Dires Potrillos
Tres Potrillos

On the weekend while celebrating labor and my sister birthday party, we went back to my old hometown. While in Texas we were hungry driving around looking for a good place to go eat. We decided to go and try a Mexican restaurant located in Arlington Texas, where my friend Jose Reyes lives.

At the moment when we got there, I saw a place that said “come in to real Mexican food” by just looking at the outside. At the moment I walked in I heard Mariachi music. As we are walking to our table, we could notice the decorations all inside the restaurant that makes people feel like they are part of the Mexican culture. They have mariachi hats, horse shoes, mariachi clothes, Mexican scarfs that are really pretty and colorful. You

My greatest influences are my parents and my brother. My brother suffered from Guillain- Barre Syndrome when he was eight. He lived in the hospital on an artificial ventilation for 97 days and later he had to continue physical therapy for at least ten years as he was completely paralyzed. My parents and my brother devoted their few years completely for his treatment. Today, my brother is a successful engineer working in the bay area. I learned that with dedication, determination and diligence we can achieve our dream in life…

At the beginning of the year it felt like I would have never been able to write any paper that was more than two pages long, it just seemed impossible, but for the research paper I actually had to stop myself from going off and writing a twelve page paper. I will admit and say that English is not my strong suit, in fact it is probably one of my more difficult classes. But just because it is difficult does not mean I don’t like it. I like looking for topics that interest me and still fit in with the guidelines, I like getting involved in the paper and researching the topic until it feels like my head is about to explode. I never saw any of that coming, I thought that I was going to have to go through English and just pray…

What is a legacy? Lin Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton described it as “planting seeds in a garden you never get to see”. In a similar way, the Broadway musical, In The Heights, sings about continuing what is passed down to you because one day it may be gone. One song in particular titled, “Paciencia y Fe” inspires me to work as hard as I can just like Abuela Claudia did when she immigrated from Cuba. The Broadway hits’ harmonies and melodies have instilled in me a sense of hope for the future, where I can continue a family legacy.…

“When I was ten years old, my brother Miguel came back from the U.S. to visit us. When he was ready to leave, he told my mom, ‘Hey, are you going to let Kiko (which was my nickname) come to the U.S., so he can go to school and have an opportunity?’ and my mom turned to me and said, ‘Do you want to go with him?’ Then I looked at her and replied, ‘Do you want me to go?’ and she nodded in approval, so I went into the house, got a backpack, and put three pants, three shirts, and a few other things in there because I didn’t have many belongings. I then went back outside, jumped into the car, and left my mom. I didn’t see my mom again until I was a senior in high school, and a lot took place during those years” (Castellanos).…

I was on the train and I overheard these two older ladies having a conversation in Spanish. At the next stop, one of the ladies got off and I took the time to familiarize myself. I learned that her name was Roberta. Luckily, she understood and spoke English, so I explained that it was an assignment for school. She agreed and I began by introducing myself and asking for her name and how she was. She replied that she was good and she asked me and I responded the same way. I asked her about her day and where she was from and she asked me where I was from, how was school, and what class I liked the most. The conversation wasn’t long, but it was longer than I thought it would be. The conversation eventually ended when she had to get off at her…

It’s Monday, December 9th. Today just seems unusual, like something big is going to happen! I wonder what it will be for a split second, then go back to studying for the Latin America quiz we have tomorrow. Mr. Fielder announces what questions we should highlight on our worksheets. I watch him go back to his desk. I look up and out the window, I see the glistening shimmer of fresh snow dancing in the sky. I cherish every second of it, wishing the time would go by slower. As time creeps closer to 12:20 p.m., the more I shudder at the thought of having to go to room 224. I finish making my flashcards, using splendid handwriting, and proper spelling and grammar. The clock whispers 12:18 p.m. in my ear, I turn white as a ghost.…

Every human struggles everyone has hardship. When I was young I began to notice that maybe it is hard to understand what other people struggle with. The start of a mundane life began as usual a bus ride to school, but today something else happened a flash of yellow a soundless luxury sports car zoomed bass by a Lamborghini. As the car passed by everyone looked at it with amazement as the never seen a car pass from this part of the street. I began to wonder when will I get one with imaginary job I will live the high life. The bus hits a bump on the road I am begging to rationalize who much work will it take to achieve greatness to struggle to overcome adversity.…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…

Activities amongst individuals have been a way to get together and commemorate the history of their origins. Both New Mexico and Chihuahua have their own customs. New Mexico boasts a number of colorful and culturally diverse celebrations; from Native American Powwows to the various Fiestas held at distinct locations along the state. It is almost impossible for any New Mexican to feel bored when it comes to these dates. Chihuahua, on the other hand, shares all of the celebrations its country has in store, each date unique and special in its own way. When it comes to food during holidays, both states have a lot to offer but New Mexico, once again, falls victim to the fact that their food is heavily based on Mexican cuisine. Tamales and menudo, as mentioned previously, are both tasty Mexican dishes which happen to be immensely popular on special dates in the American state. New Mexico does not provide a lot of originality when it pertains to their holiday meals. Standing on the opposite side of the spectrum, Chihuahua keeps rights to original and delicious holiday…

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…
