"Pardon me? Would you be able to please rehash that?" The first words out of my mouth when my specialist had let me know I required a cornea transplant. His words were like Charlie Brown's instructor. Right then and there, what I was hearing was "wa." My heart dashed at 1000 beats a moment. "Mrs. Sides, you may come on back," said the secretary. I gestured my head in affirmation and continued through the swinging doors. Not a word was talked. Without a doubt, this was the fleeting tranquility before all hell breaks loose. Roughly, after four hours, I was in recuperation and had my first cornea transplant. Stir by the recuperation attendant, languid, and a fixed eye, she reported that the surgery went well. With a slight grin, I gestured and whispered "Bless your heart." Shortly subsequently, Dr. Schlichtemeier returned and finished his perception before discharging me to go home. After two years I experienced my last surgery.
After the transplants, I understood there were words on the catches on my microwave, and afterward I took a gander at my dishwasher and saw the same thing. I couldn't trust it. I learned that I should never use my condition to get special privileges, nor should I use it to receive sympathy from others. I’ve also learned to try new things, even if said things seem impossible. After all, the doctors told me that walking and running would be impossible, and yet I deceived them. The doctors told my parents that I’d never be able to play sports, and yet I have the awards to prove I can. The doctors told me I would have challenges in life, but everyone has challenges. In the end it's what you make of those challenges that make you who you…

I felt this sense of fear, but I knew it was just nervousness. It caused my whole body to tremble. I creeped onto the field and pass by the fifty girls and all of the coaches. Just me walking by everyone gave me this ginormous knot in my stomach, it made me feel like I was going to pass out right on the field. I was breathing heavy, like I just ran a marathon. I was beyond nervous just to be the new girl on the field. I was scared of what the girls thought of me, and how the coaches thought I would play and adapt to the sport. I had never even picked up a lacrosse stick and the girls were passing, catching and shooting on goal: how does a new player get to there if they were two week late into the season? I was terrified I would never get to the level of the rest of the team.…

From a very early age, I remember looking up to my father in his optometry practice. From about the age of 8, I knew I wanted to help people like he did. I remember how he could comfort a patient by listening to what they had to say. It was always a treat for me to watch him work with a patient. He usually began by just speaking with the patient about their life and how they were doing, and then he would conduct the exam with such a fluid and calm demeanor that nearly every patient was completely at ease. I remember thinking how great a feeling he must have had when he helped them and how they must feel to know their doctor cares for their well-being.…
