It began in middle school. The experience that has made me the student I am today–a determined one. Having English as a second language has had a huge impact on how I view things as a student and as a writer. Being bilingual has its ups and downs. One of its downfalls is being placed in ELD class, or English language, class. Being put into ELD is very different than regular English classes. Having learned Spanish since birth it is a big change from English. For example, when you say or write a sentence in Spanish, the structure is reversed, compared to translated into English. The moment that led me to develop theses strategies was when my teacher, Ms. Rivera, assigned a writing assignment about the book Esperanza Rising. In my essay I had to about how Esperanza developed from being a rich girl who was used to receiving everything to going into poverty and losing everything. The first thing I would do is research or get clarification on the prompt I was given. When I received the prompt for Esperanza Rising, I analyzed key points that had to be stated specifically in my essay. The most crucial points that had to be specified would be to show the turning point where Esperanza realize that there are more important things than riches. I would also bullet point some ideas to help me brainstorm and let out my creativity. I bulleted examples and points made how Esperanza was at the beginning of the book and how she came to grow at the end. The next step I would do is I would start jotting down all my thought and ideas, and where I would like my essay or prompt to go. For this assignment, I outlined my essay by first writing some of the examples I gathered and then analyzing what the examples showed. I would usually ask a friend or my teachers to review and look over my essay to see if there are any running sentences, misused grammar, or even if it sounded good. Therefore, I credit my love for reading to my sixth grade teacher Ms. Rivera who made me and my class read Esperanza Rising, it has been my favorite book ever since then. Esperanza Rising was about a teen adolescent who went from having money, jewelry, etc. and then having everything taken away from her. When I read, I read to escape reality for a while. Stories fire my imagination and, for a little while it lets me live in the world of fantasy, instead of this often boring one, because in the world of story anything can happen. Reading has really expanded my knowledge by helping me improve in my vocabulary and the way I write.
