Personal Narrative: Excelling In Math
Excelling in Math I never came kindly to the subject of Math. Math was always about constant rote memorization, full of extensive redundant notes that always found their way stuffed into the folds of my notebook never to be seen again. I held onto this impression the entire duration of ninth grade. However, upon a simple happenstance of acquiring the right math teacher with a different approach to math, I became increasingly aware of my previous errors in thinking. Everything was not as unyielding and tedious as I thought it was. Experiencing a teacher with a powerful new perspective altered my rigid frame of thinking, allowing me to excel in math. At the beginning of ninth grade, I was slowly recovering from clinical depression, a cruel, brooding disorder that makes one feel as if they would be content with drowning in the endless unforgiving abyss of the ocean. Along with this pestering grim recovery came the stress and lingering anxiety of potentially failing a freshman math class. Mr. Albaugh, my ninth grade math teacher, was a fairly young, arrogant, but undoubtedly intelligent math teacher. When I solve a math problem now, I am questioning everything, always remembering to ask as many questions as possible instead of sitting in a lecture with a blank expression plastered on my face. Rising above my clinical depression and past failures, I have chosen to openly accept all perspectives and integrate them into my learning process. However, this is not to say that I am afraid of failures, for now greet failures with open arms. I sought comfort in knowing that I had risen above my past failures that were haunting me.     One thing that I think that sets me apart from other candidates applying to the University of California is that I put my heart and soul on every assignment, projects and exam. I work hard and put time on the assignment, projects and exam. I also give my full effort.     In general, I would describe my ability in math as average. I did well in elementary, but middle school was when I started having difficulties.     In my experience in this course, I was taught and also came across many different concepts of becoming a math educator. By being a math teacher, to me it means that we must know and also process the information that is giving and taught to us as well. I have heard many individuals say the math is an easy subject to teach, because everything is written out for us educators step by steps. But, what they do not know it that this course takes time, and also require a little preparation and knowledge of the subject to teach the students how to perform well in this course. In this class it was viewed as a new experience, and when I referred back to my past math teachers it was brought to my attention that they actually understands how to do the math and in many different ways other than just what is in the book. I tend to do better and remember the math concepts longer when I am actually practicing on the assignments. It is easy to just write out the math problems steps from book or from a lesson plan, but to really take the time and to explain the steps in a way for all students to understand the problems takes practice and an understanding of the math ourselves. Becoming a math teacher takes time and it especially takes patience, because not all students will get the solution on the first try, so we as teachers, would have to make sure that they will grasp the concept before moving on to the next assignment. In other words we would have to recognize the student’s readiness or not readiness for the next step in math. So, we would have to put in a lot of time and effort for each student, even if that means continue to work with them before and after school to make sure they are getting what they are doing before moving on to the next.     I first met Math when I was young. He gave me a hard time. Back in the days of flashcards and simple addition, I shied away from the numbers and rapid computations. It wasn’t because I sucked at it or I hated competing with others, but mainly because I tend to overthink things and worry too much and end up miserably failing. To this day, I need a calculator (when allowed) to see if I added 1+1 correctly. Math is fun, but only when Math takes it easy on you or lets you understand him/her. The feeling of solving a problem is one of life’s greatest joys, that and seeing a Toki with space 10 minutes before your next class. There are days though when Math seemingly hates you (which is practically everyday for none mathletic people) and wants to ruin your life and steal everyone you hold dear away from you. Really, if you don’t understand the lesson, this is what Math feels like. The only thing you can do is try to appease him/her by spending time with him/her and trying to understand what he/she wants you to know. It is troublesome, but since Math is necessary in a whole bunch of areas and fields you have to work with her for good. Math is a necessary evil. Maybe not evil, but just really hard.
