Personal Narrative: First Day Of Night School
It all started on the first day of Night School. I was the first student to walk into the classroom, excited for a fun and interesting semester I was eager to meet my new classmates as well as to make new friends in night school. All was going well that night until Ms. Easton my night school English teacher began to speak to us about the ISU. She began by telling the class to forget about what we previously thought an ISU s for English class was. That was not what I was expecting. Earlier, that week in day school where I was already enrolled in the Grade twelve University English course, I was told by my English teacher that we had to read two novels and write two essays which compared the two novels and their various themes for our ISU. As she continued to speak my heart began pounding "an ISU where we don't have to read two novels and write essays about them? That doesn't sound right…" I thought to myself. I could feel myself getting more and more anxious until Ms. Easton finally explained that the ISU was going to be an Abstract noun of our choice. "An abstract noun? I quietly whispered to …show more content…
Easton said. I began, to learn the difference between abstract nouns and concrete nouns. Concrete nouns register the five senses. Now all of this was starting to make more sense to me. Then, we began to brainstorm abstract nouns and that's when I relaxed because I knew that there was a variety of abstract nouns to choose from for the ISU. Words such as joy, passion, loyalty, happiness, evil, faith etc. After the class brainstormed enough words, we were given the task of writing down our top three abstract nouns on a piece of paper that Ms. Easton handed out. That's when my mind went blank, I didn't want to choose a word like love or happiness because most people would want it, but I also didn't want to choose a difficult word like

Before arriving on my first day of instruction, I believed that my argumentation skills were at a reasonable level and as a result I was not going to learn an abundance in English 2, critical thinking and writing. However, this was not the case. I quickly realized that the pathos, ethos and logos of which was introduced to me in high school, had long lost their meaning and subsequently found myself in the deep end of the swimming pool, once again. With that being said, through learning these concepts, planning for the subsequent tasks and writing the assigned essays, I acquired a substantial amount of knowledge which is widely applicable.…

“Tom’ “ my teacher called. It was my turn to read my the poem aloud. My heart was racing and I was prepared to read what I thought to be a mediocre poem to the class. I did not comprehend any of the poems we went over in class so I felt terribly uncomfortable explaining it to the class. It seemed as if everyone was able to interpret the poem except me. How was I to know what the poet really meant? I was not there when he wrote the poem. That day left a bad taste in my mouth, and that was the beginning of difficulty in language arts. Whenever a language arts teacher asked me to interpret a poem or analyze a story, my head would ache. I told myself that language arts and literature were for “deep thinkers,” and I convinced myself that I I was no that type of thinker. My teacher explained that knowing about the periods in literature and knowing facts about the writers were the keys to unlocking the meaning to literary works, but I convinced myself that it was not for me.…

During my tenth grade year my English class always flowed smoothly. As a class we were never really required to do much more than babysit ourselves. There were countless days we sat in class and did simple worksheets on the book Night by Elie Wiesel which I had read in the eighth grade. Not realizing this was an English class it felt like kindergarten all over again. I had even considered it to be the best class period through my first two years of high school. It was chill, easy, and, comfortable. That comfortableness had not only crippled me but was what played a key part in my eleventh grade misery. That’s when it had all started.…

Starting high school was a terrifying idea to me. Different teachers, class times, lockers, drama! I remember that I always looked up to my older sister while she was in high school. She had tons of friends, played sports, participated in student government, and went out for the school play. I wanted to be just like her when I started high school. In middle school, I lined myself up for this, I played soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. I helped out in the school plays, and I joined the student government. I had a group of great friends, and thought nothing bad was going to happen.…

When I started my first semester at Florida SouthWestern, I found myself under a crushing amount of stress and believed I would be overwhelmed within the first week. I also convinced myself that the Cornerstone Experience was a significant waste of my time. However, throughout the semester my opinions changed as the course introduced me to several important topics that I found myself referring back to throughout the semester: financial literacy, time management and wellness and stress management.…

High school is one of the biggest transitions in a person's early life. You go from being at the top in your school to the bottom. For me, it was very hard to adjust to this change. On my first day of high school, I walked into first period so nervous I thought I was going to get sick. This is much like what happened during my transition into middle school. On the first day at Mazzuchelli, right before the first class began, I threw up all over the floor of the classroom. I’m not a big fan of change. To make matters worse, the first week of high school was outrageously hot. The combination of the heat and my nerves made me sweat uncontrollably. At the time, I felt very self conscious of sweating during class. As bad as these first few days…

When I first arrived to Richmond Early College High School, I anticipated an academic career characterized by hard work, nightly homework assignments, and incredible doses of stress that a middle school classroom could not synthesize. Although I actually landed my first college class in the second semester of my ninth grade year (ACA, which was required for all newbies and taken simultaneously by all 50 of us), I found myself still shaken. I looked forwarded to the challenges of a college experience, but merely hearing the click of my instructor's heel's as I sat in that classroom for the first time sent my bones into a furious rattle. A worrywart by nature, I was both delighted and horrified by ACA.…

I was the kind of guy who always strove in order to get the highest grades but yet hadn’t decided what to do in the future. I wasn’t worried, I knew someday I would find something in what I was good at. I got to live with that thought for some time until I got to attend middle school, where I stopped worrying about my grades and managed only to pass the subjects. I spent most of my time sleeping due to the frustration of not knowing what to do in the future. Most of my middle school experience was tasteless. I hadn’t friends at all, and teachers used to discourage their students about their future. “You're not going to college, you’ll not be able to do it because you’re poor” used to say, Mrs. Vazquez, the math teacher who instead of giving her class, talked on how much his son had accomplished in college and how we would not be able to attend. That was about to change.…

During my freshman year of high school I received a letter in the mail. This letter was an invitation to play basketball in Australia, with other boys and girls of my age. The date was September 13, 2011. The letter stated that we would be leaving June 1, of 2012. Of course I wanted to go as soon as I read the letter, but my family was more curious about the trip. We did some research and figured out everything that would be offered on this trip. In my research I read of playing Australian basketball games, snorkeling, swimming in the ocean, surfing, and spending three days on Tangalooma Island. This was enough to convince my family that it would indeed be a fun trip for me to attend.…

In all honesty, I had very low expectations of English 103. I have always preferred math and science over English and did not enjoy English 102 very much. Despite my low expectations and preconceived notions of what English 103 would entail, I actually enjoyed myself this semester. Specifically, the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot changed my demeanor. I should start with the fact that I am a feminist and anything about equality, gender roles, or stereotypes intrigues me. This poem’s take on what true masculinity entails entranced me almost immediately. The class spent on this poem was the lecture I participated the most in. After the lecture, I was taken aback by my amount of participation because I do not often like…
