Personal Narrative: Group Communication
Every Sunday morning, I set my alarm clock early and get out of bed as if it were any regular school day. After quickly eating my breakfast and freshening up, I hop in the driver’s seat of my car with my dad guiding me as I drive down Highway 96, wind around the lake, and arrive at the nursing home. I began volunteering at Johanna Shores August of my sophomore year. When I first started, I still felt strangely new to the idea of leadership. I was so used to talking to people my age that conversing with adults made me incredibly tense. I felt as though it was nothing like my volunteer experience at the tutoring center last year where the kids were too young to judge my mistakes, and I couldn’t help but think: “Why am I doing this?”.

Recently, I was given the chance to volunteer at the hospital and participate in a student-run education company which creates spanish e-books for middle school students. I never worked in business before, and by expanding my horizons, I was finally able to apply the knowledge I learned in the classroom to the real world. As a student, I often think inside the box, but by working as part of a company I was able to learn about what group communication really means. I now know how to talk to people so they understand my perspective and passion. In addition, I learned how to teach, answer interview questions, and resolve conflicts. So why is it that I wake up early to volunteer? Or, more generally, participate in activities outside of school? To put it simply, I do what I do so I can keep growing, meeting new people, and having fun. With each experience, I find out more about how I work best and how other people work as well.
It is an honor to be eligible for the National Honors Society, and I am excited to participate in such a renowned activity. Through the Honors Society, I hope to learn more about what being a leader means and how to help others become leaders as

Being a member in National Honor Society implies that you are a person of great character. One of the most important qualities that you can possess is leadership. Honesty is one of the key factors to being a good leader. You must be honest towards everyone, and in everything that you do. If a leader wasn't honest, then no one would trust them. And if they weren't trustworthy then who would want to follow their lead? Leadership also requires that you have an optimistic attitude about everything. You have to take control, and look for the best in every situation. No one wants to follow someone who is always in a bad mood, and always looks for something to complain about.…

The social-emotional domain is most of interest to me. As Humans we interact pretty much throughout our lives, our emotions often play a large role on how we develop socially and how that ties to our emotions. From birth we gradually start to develop these relationships with the people around us. Over time this process of learning to communicate, share, and interact with others takes many years to develops. We continue to develop these skills into our teenage years, and even as young adults. So with that I do believe that the development in this domain is mostly a continuous one.…

My group forming experience begins every new school year when the math and business teachers come together to form the math/business department. The school has several departments but this particular department is headed by me. This year is comprised of twelve members. This is quite lagre according to S. Robbins et al, (2013) who states that the most effective teams have 5 – 9 members. Most experts suggest using the smallest number of people who can do the task. So there in lies the challenge. The forming stage puts together all the teachers who teach math and or business. The leader is selected by the principal. The storming stage commences with a number of department meetings to plan and structure the entire school year with plans to have…

My leadership experiences position around a distinct premise. I shall attempt to define that premise from my viewpoint. Under the direction and suggestion of my grade school Saint Margaret Mary, volunteering in our community was inspired. Although there were no opportunities to serve in leadership roles during this undertaking, I had always embraced leadership. As a son of a Marine, I grew up with a solid sense of duty and service, in addition to a first-hand knowledge of leadership qualities.…

At the age of six, I struggled to find the meaning behind all of the little iron on patches, and what they had been leading up to. The Gold award, awarded to 5.4% of eligible girls, is the most prestigious award, above a silver and bronze. It definitely isn’t attained without hard work and dedication. The guidelines of the project are clear: you need to exemplify leadership qualities and create a lasting impact in the community. My idea to work with the elderly and the youth group from my church came immediately. Observing my community, I noted that the elderly and youth don’t communicate or interact with one another. I believe that those types of relationships are essential in life, due to my own connection with my grandmother. She is one of the funniest people I know, and even though she is 90, we can still connect on a personal level and laugh at just about anything together. I want others to experience that for themselves, because even though they may be older than us, they are still young at heart, and have all led interesting lives with stories beyond…

When I was younger I was in the Palomino Horse Breeders of America Association. I was on the National Youth Board for seven years, my last year I was the National Youth President. Throughout my years on the board I learned a lot about team work, especially during my year as President. The main thing that I learned about team work is that no one on the board knew what it was. I was not too surprised because everyone in the horse industry is so competitive and high strung that they don’t trust anyone else to do their work or to make good decisions. For example, I had two youth advisors who made my life, during my presidency, extremely difficult. As advisor they were only allowed to overlook our decisions to make sure we stayed on topic and were…
