Personal Narrative: Gymnastics
Gymnastics enveloped my childhood. My wardrobe consisted mostly of multicolored leotards. My house was constantly dusted with white gymnastics chalk. My walls were covered in posters of Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson, Olympians who I idolized. Years of my life were spent transfixed on this sport which strives for a seemingly unattainable perfection. Yet, the dedication and discipline that gymnastics taught me will stay with me forever, and these traits have helped me to discover new goals, even in the wake of disappointment.
Seventh grade brought a great deal of change in my life. Not only did I start middle school, but I also began taking one ballet class a week. Though gymnastics continued to be the center of my life, I started to fall in love with dancing. Meanwhile, the gymnastics state

I did moderately well in every event with no major falters despite my lack of recent practice. The most difficult event was the floor. This was the routine which had caused my injury two weeks before. Toward the end of this routine, I took an extra step which lowered my score by .5 points. While the judges calculated everyone’s scores to determine who would receive medals, I anxiously waited to find out whether I had qualified to compete at the regional competition. After what felt like hours, we finally had the awards ceremony where I received medals on the beam and all around. Though I was happy about the medals, my heart was shattered when I found out I hadn’t qualified for Regionals. My teammate Allie had beaten me by .5 points, causing her to qualify in my place. Initially, I felt a great deal of animosity toward Allie because I felt that I deserved to go to Regionals more than her after overcoming my injury. However, my anger subsided and was replaced with happiness for her and her accomplishment. When Regionals came, I traveled to Las Vegas with Allie and her family to support my teammates at the

An unknown pain in my back wound me up in the trainer's office for an hour of the two and a half hour practice. After finishing the season strong, even though I wanted to give up countless times, pushing myself to work through the pain paid off at regionals. Even though I should have stopped because I made the pain and recovery time longer, I refused to give up on my team the week before regionals. The minute season ended, I decided to go see my doctor, he said I pulled a muscle, and the solution was rest, heat, and ice.…

The most memorable thing that happened to me was when I first discovered what I’m really good at. I came across inspiring Youtube videos of old classic Roller Derby and recent ones that were published only a year ago, I knew from the moment I laid eyes on those quads that I had to try it. In less than two weeks I was a complete natural at skating, I was all about skates. I practiced all the derby stances, exercises, techniques you name it I am absolutely in love with this sport. but as much as I fantasized about doing it I never thought that I’d actually get the chance to be part of their world and have training by the Derby Dames Juniors Freshmeat Association crew, which are ranked the top thirty-one in the united states!…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. When I was in second grade I learned that I loved competing with people and being good at things. I joined a gymnastics gym near my house in second grade when i was 9, and started competing when i was 10. My mom told me that I have to do well in school if I was going to be focused on a sport along with school, or she would take me out of gymnastics. Soon enough, I wasn’t doing so well in social studies and comm skills. I was scared my mom would make me quit, But I worked as hard as I could so get back up there. Focusing more on school than outside activities, I got that grade back up and I continued with my favorite sport. I love gymnastics, but I don’t let it get in the way of school because school always comes first.…

From the day I could walk, I was involved in sports. From playing tee-ball in the backyard with my dad when I was three, to trying three new sports as a senior, athletics have been an integral part of my life. In my elementary school days, I tried every sport that was offered through the Jefferson Parks and Recreation. This included baseball, football, wrestling, karate, soccer, and tennis. Through middle school, I dropped several of these sports to focus on my two favorite sports, baseball and wrestling. Training for these two sports never ended and most of my time was spent either on a baseball field or on a wrestling mat. Entering my high school years, baseball and wrestling were the only sports I competed in. By my sophomore year, I was…

“You can quit when you are finished.” My dad has been saying this my entire life. Everytime he said that I took it to heart because, it is a powerful saying if you really and truly follow it. I had followed that saying my whole life relatively easily, until my freshman year of wrestling. During that season I was tested in how much I really believed in what my dad had been saying.…

“Taylor, what is that on the fence?” My sister asked me as we were walking off of the bus. I looked where she was pointing and saw my goat, Divinity. I knew that it didn’t look right, so I started running towards her. As I got closer I realized that her leg was stuck in the fence and she was in a great deal of pain. When I got to her she looked up at me, like she knew I would be able to help her. I was so scared because I have had her since I was 7 years old, and I didn’t want to lose her. I had to figure out how to help her by myself as my sister was sitting there crying, not helping whatsoever. I got down close to her and told her that it would be okay as I examined her leg. It became obvious to me that I would have to cut the wire so that she could get free. It was hard to think clearly because I just wanted her to be okay.…

While colleges take in account your GPA and test scores, I have also found that colleges look into character and how a potential student will make a positive impact at their school. Through my research, I have found that the most common qualities colleges hope for in a student are leadership, a willingness to take risks, and initiative. I immediately knew that these characteristics were instilled in me through gymnastics. Being part of a team, there is usually a leader or a captain. This position requires honesty, enthusiasm, positivity, and commitment.…
