Personal Narrative: I Hope For The Future Of America
Thomas Jefferson once advised, “The greatest good we can do our country is to heal its party divisions and make them one people.” In addition to party, America has increasingly divided itself in multiple forms. Some of these include, but are not limited to, socioeconomic status, race, occupation, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs. My hope for the future of America is that we stop labeling ourselves and unify as the Americans that we are. It seems like people forget why our ancestors originally came to America; in order to escape persecution found in political, economic, and religious institutions. In modern America, these problems have resurfaced. It is incredibly hard to move up in class, everyone has to be on a side, and if you …show more content…
My former history teacher once told my class that we shouldn’t choose sides, and stay as moderate as possible. Labeling ourselves as a Democrat or a Republican too soon may conflict when we have a differing opinion from what is considered normal. Radicalism becomes regressive, choosing a side leaves people with no opportunity to grow, and opinions don’t change facts. Opinions can be maintained without having to tell other people they’re wrong. Our attention is drawn away from important issues if we get lost in trying to figure out what side is “right” about something rather than looking at something from all angles and try to figure out what is the best conclusion. Occupations are another thing that they give us an identity, which also affects our socio economic status. However, being a janitor doesn’t make you less of an American, but other careers often mean you have to sacrifice much more for your country. Even still, veterans who have sacrificed their all are treated poorly in America. An occupation that society believes is low doesn’t mean that their social status has to be sacrificed, though. Hamilton and Jefferson had conflicting ideas on almost every issue, from how to interpret the Constitution, to who should lead the United States. As Hamilton and Jefferson gathered supporters, they both established parties. Hamilton created the Federalist Party ( the modern day equivalent to the Democratic Party). Federalists liked big national government; as opposed to Jefferson's Republican Party, which liked small national government to give more power to states. In the past, Republicans and Democrats have worked together and compromised on issues involving the country. However, recently, compromise is not being reached between the two parties. This has naturally created a divide in our country, which has only been amplified in recent presidential elections. In the words of former U.S ambassador Antonio Garza, "We've allowed ourselves to slide into the politics of anger and fear, of a group of name-calling, where the others – be they immigrants, bankers or supporters of the other candidate – are stupid, crazy, or corrupt. We've forgotten that these nameless individuals are often our neighbors, doctors, teachers, friends and family members" (Garza, 2). As illustrated by the quote, the supporters of both parties and the parties themselves are not working together. Instead, Republicans are too focused on stopping the Democratic party, and Democrats are too focused on stopping the Republican…

Controversy on issues like gun control, stem cell research, assisted suicide, global warming, and more are pushing us further apart. The main reason for this is because technology has given us the luxury of watching the news 24/7 instead of doing our own research. When these topics are discussed, people are so fixated on being right that we forget to try and find a solution. Nowadays our sources we receive our information from are biased and not truly based on facts, thus giving everyone a different side of the same story. Similar to Rome that was divided into two empires, we are divided into two different parties.…

Political tensions will continue to rise in the United States as both parties continue to be uninterested in the beliefs of the opposing party. Many politicians have engaged in polarization, which has further divided republicans and democrats. The rise of social media has allowed individuals to find social circles that share their beliefs, as well as block out people and content that doesn't align with what they believe. How can we create solutions to the problems that every American deals with if citizens are not willing to talk about them? America is a democracy that needs its citizens to address problems within its infrastructure and make choices that benefit present and future generations.…

Especially in the last few years, political party divisions in Congress and with the Presidency have become harsher. Yet, though he warned against political parties, Washington recognized the natural tendency for people to organize around like interests. Without political parties it would be much harder for elected officials to get their legislation passed. They would have to focus on individual alliances, instead of first garnering support from their party. We would have representatives with wider and more diverse viewpoints rather than ones who toe the party line. And we would have even more division and…

In American history, we fought long and hard to get there but there has always been a clear line in regards to our politics. We have two sides that have straightforward ideologies, and two sides that are separated for all the good of the people that are involved. In history, we had the Federalist and the Anti-federalist who stood out with different ideologies on how our country’s government should run and the rule of law should be executed. The Federalist wanted a stronger national government, and the Anti-federalist who opposed a stronger federal government.…

My political viewpoint has changed dramatically since I was first introduced to politics. I come from a democratic family, where it is strongly believed that it is the government’s responsibility to care for all people and that the government knows what is best for all people. Every voting season, my parents vote for a democratic president and explain to me the reasoning behind their decision. It was not until I was in the tenth grade that I realized that I did not hold the same political beliefs as my parents. After taking several political quizzes and extensively researching the bevy of political parties, I now know that I am an independent. What is an independent? An independent is an individual politician not affiliated to any political…

    How Divided Are We

From this, many may assume that there are divisions within the population. Generally, it would range from the Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals, the orthodox and the progressive. The ideas of all opposing group creates much friction upon beliefs. There is always two set sides in every major argument ( with some exceptions of neutral or other), which unfortunately never solves problems in most cases. In the article “ How Divided Are We?” by James Q. Wilson he raises a topic question “is wrong with having well-defined parties arguing vigorously about the issues matter? Is it possible that polarized politics is a good thing, encouraging sharp debate and clear position?” . Polarization becomes very intense in the US, to the point where it indicates a long passive culture war. As a result , instead of debates being resolved, “Polarization is a force that can defeat us.” This foreshadows that culture war may never be resolved, but only discourage and set more oil within the…

Within our modern era, many United States citizens fail to realize that we are conquered by two colossal titans. Though they have combated for over a century, it is evident that they are alike in many facets, and this ultimately enables them to avert notable conflict. These two behemoths are none other than the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Though Democrats generally adopt more liberal platforms, Republicans have a tendency to foster more conservative ones; In spite of this superficial difference, there are many similarities that enable Democrats and Republicans to reconcile. To overcome their differences, it is imperative for Democrats and Republicans to understand the similarities and contrasts that exist between them.…

The country that was once unified is now divided. How did it come to this? Though, there are several possible answers to this question, one stands out in particular, political correctness. The Oxford Dictionary defines political correctness as “The avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.” Even though there are times in which political correctness is needed, more often than not, political correctness is over dramatized. The American society has become so politically correct, that no one is able to speak their mind without facing major judgment or…

During the first weeks of class, students learned about what political polarization is. The authors from Political Polarization in American Polarization see America on a level where polarization is increasing, especially in the state legislature. However, authors from Culture War? would disagree, saying that America is not becoming more polarized, rather political activists are the ones who are polarized. The Frontline documentary “Divided States of America-2” provides insightful information on the process of America becoming more polarized. After class discussions based on assigned readings and watching the Frontline documentary, one can come to the conclusion that America is polarized to a certain extent. Political activists and politicians make America polarized, but uninformed citizens contribute little to the polarization that…

This ideology seems to have evolved and held truth for the past 227 years as now Americans are even more divided by political parties than any other stature. According to Edward S. Greenberg and Benjamin I. Page’s “The Struggle for Democracy”, political ideology is defined as a system of interrelated and coherently organized political beliefs and attitudes, which include conservatives, liberals, populists, and libertarians (145). Greenburg and Page further describe that the “two dimensions” that Americans generally divide along are government’s roles in economy and society (147).…
