The country that was once unified is now divided. How did it come to this? Though, there are several possible answers to this question, one stands out in particular, political correctness. The Oxford Dictionary defines political correctness as “The avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.” Even though there are times in which political correctness is needed, more often than not, political correctness is over dramatized. Political correctness meant to unify the country, but it doesn’t. It corrupts the minds of the people, it changes how college education should be, it makes it difficult for businesses to keep customers, and it’s trying to erase history. This society has become too concerned with how other people feel, or how a comment or gesture offended them. As a society, people need to realize that not everyone is going to feel the same way as they do, but that shouldn’t offend them. Opinions are great, people should get to express how they truly feel, and not have to worry about getting shunned for it. America has become too politically correct, but that doesn’t mean this society has to stay that

The Bill of Rights, Amendment I states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (Bill of Rights). These rights were basically protecting what people say, and write, however, we are slowly loosing those rights. We have to worry now about offending someone because of our language, or saying something that is considered politically incorrect. A quote that has made a big difference in my perception when dealing with people is “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”. (Lydgate) As I grow older, I see this to be so true. If you look around, you see people being offended more and more. When you please one group, then another group will be offended. There is no way to please everyone, even with claiming terms are politically correct/incorrect. We are in a vicious cycle of using a word in the proper context, it being misused, being changed to a politically correct word, then the word being misused again.…

America was formed by outcasts from every region in the world. Many sought religious freedom and others escaped from trouble at home. As a nation full of the unwanted we do a lot to make others feel ostracized. The Jim Crow laws, which were in place in the south for almost a century accomplished the sole goal of separating African Americans from the rest of society. During the onset of World War Two we incarcerated thousands of Japanese Americans, because of their heritage. We have a history of making every effort to prevent change and divide this nation. All of this is simply evidence that this problem has existed between races and communities, since this nation’s founding. Today, however, it is unacceptable to target other races and as a result we have turned our focus to within our communities.…

This article was written about the topic of political correctness in American society. This is a very relevant subject in today’s political issues. The author believes that political correctness is extremely detrimental to American…

Imagine a young boy with autism who struggles to interact socially. Other children consider him unintelligent, and they have no trouble making him aware of their opinions. They call him names like retarded, dumb, and ignorant, but he cannot change the condition he has, so he withstands the insults. Even though the other children never strike him with their fists, the harsh words they use are just as intense. Politically incorrect terms, like “retarded,” that are used to hurt others are degrading, impudent, and should not be used.…

We live in a world where there are numerous discriminations: race, religion, sex, age, or sexual orientation. bell hooks has eloquently explained multiple reasons why the black population is discriminated against in an educational setting, “...most white folks are rarely, if ever, in a situation where they must listen to black women lecture to them.” (hooks, 31) Daily we hear about the killings of transsexual men and women, as well as multiple examinations talking about men who receive more money then women in the workplace for the same job. Carl Grant intelligently said, “Another factor stimulating the change is the acceptance of the importance of social cultural factors in learning and the movement toward challenging traditional assumptions and envisioning multiple possibilities for change.” (Grant, 1) The discrimination I’m talking about most people don’t understand or even see,…

If the world ended up exactly how the Mayans thought, we would be dead. If the world ended up exactly how America though 200 years ago, we would all have white picket fences, and family`s would be all white; husband, wife, son, and daughter. We would all live in peace and harmony. But that's not reality and in this quote the author explains how society always changes it`s standards, “That's the way politics works sometimes. We try really hard to persuade people that we're right and then people vote. And then if we lose, we learn from our mistakes, we do some reflection, we lick our wounds, we brush ourselves off, we get back in the arena, we go at it. We try even harder the next time”(__).…

People are entitled to one of the rights listed in the first amendment, the freedom of speech. It’s true that some people are hateful but even if we don’t like, agree, or even joke about it we don’t have the right to control them. People are unable to express their thoughts and feelings because they do not want to offend others.…

Should our country sacrifice the solutions our country needs just to keep within the confines of political correctness? That would be destructive for the well- being of our nation at this time. Ben Carson is a proponent of saying things as they are and he could care less about being politically correct. I believe that most American’s support Ben Carson’s idea of not being politically correct if we want to fix the problems in our country. Political correctness is a serious matter that censors what we say and how we say it. I believe it is the start of violating the First Amendment on free speech.…

Over the past eight years the United States has been under the influence of democratic leaders and have brought back the ideas of social liberty and freedom. These values would be a welcome addition to the melting pot of culture that the U.S. has become. Initially political correctness was seen as a way to be normal but recently it transformed into a hefty road block towards progress. Along with politically correctness Liberalism has followed, and both have been the cause of great harm mentally and physically to thousands of conservatives of all ages across the nation. Being politically correct is all about not hurting someone else’s feelings, although it sounds more like a silly rule you would hear about in an elementary school classroom, it is not.…

Political Correctness has been growing more and more over the recent years. However, it has been considered for a long period of time. For example, in the 1800's, a "Politically Correct" movement was put in place for an anti-slavery reason. Although many people might not reckon this as an important thing to consider, I think there is a reason why this has been dealt with for hundreds of years. Political Correctness not only stops things such as racism and sexism, but it also bring out many advantageous factors.…

Despite originating in early 1990, the term political correctness did not gain notable traction until more recent years. Today the term political correctness is aimlessly thrown about in the political arena from both sides of the aisle-but what does the term truly mean? Does it achieve its purpose? To fully understand the complexities surrounding this ideology, one must first examine the raw intention and foundation of the term. Political correctness is wildly accepted as the avoidance of expressions, actions, or microaggressions that can be perceived to offend, marginalize, or exclude specific groups of people who are inherently socially disadvantaged and/or discriminated against. However well intended the terms roots may be, political correctness in America has rose to a dangerously high level; the unwavering effort by the politically correct conscious to avoid offending any certain group or individual has lead to a highly sensitive, censored, and tip-toeing society.…

I’m going to talk about some of the ways of the past for a minute so bear with me. In “The Gettysburg Address” Lincoln states that “all men are created equal.” There was a point in time during the civil rights movement when all men had their freedom but were segregated by race. But now in this age of time there’s no problem in America going into a restaurant or a school or a store, because America as a nation settled their racist ways so that the statement Lincoln wrote in the “Gettysburg Address” will stand correct and better America as a nation.…

Thomas Paine praised the American society saying that it is made up “of people from different nations… speaking different languages.” He praises the government for allowing all of these people to live together and in harmony, enjoying equal rights. Minus the ideas of slavery, which still existed in society, all people were treated equally. It was even written in the Constitution. Unfortunately, this idea does not hold true for the current American society. Discrimination, racism, and sexism still exist and are a large part of many people’s everyday lives. Organizations like the KKK still have 6,000 members and are growing. Additionally, police…

College students that belong to the majority group usually aren’t fond of being told that their unintentional actions mean they’re actually a racist. Conversely, those who support these checks on language grow more angry, discouraged that their majority counterparts cannot agree with strict rules on communication. Whenever something offensive is spoken, students adopt a victimized sense of self, creating a tirade of upheaval. Rather than developing mob mentality, calling for major change, peaceful discussion should instead be…

Social rights activist Bayard Rustin once said, “If we desire a society of peace, then we cannot achieve such a society through violence. If we desire a society without discrimination, then we must not discriminate against anyone in the process of building this society.” Discrimination is still a a problem in today’s society, yet there is little being done to stop it completely. Stopping stereotyping, socializing outside of your comfort zone, and no long prejudging others are three methods in which we can battle this bigotry.…
