Personal Narrative: My Political Perspective

My political viewpoint has changed dramatically since I was first introduced to politics. I come from a democratic family, where it is strongly believed that it is the government’s responsibility to care for all people and that the government knows what is best for all people. Every voting season, my parents vote for a democratic president and explain to me the reasoning behind their decision. It was not until I was in the tenth grade that I realized that I did not hold the same political beliefs as my parents. After taking several political quizzes and extensively researching the bevy of political parties, I now know that I am an independent. What is an independent? An independent is an individual politician not affiliated to any political
party (Independent American Party).
Independents do not blindly follow any political party and they form their beliefs based on their own personal experiences. As a result, it is unlikely that two independents have the same viewpoints on today’s various issues. For example, a few of my beliefs include: the right to abortion and the right to bear arms.
I am pro-choice because I believe that a woman should not be forced to give birth if she does not wish to do so--especially if she unwillingly impregnated. A common argument to this belief is that if a woman willingly partakes in unprotected sex and is aware that she risks being impregnated, she is responsible for her actions. I concede that a woman should either abstain or practice safe sex if she feels she is not ready to uphold the role of a parent. However, I believe that if a woman knows that she is unable to give her child the necessities it needs to survive, the responsible choice of action is an abortion.
