Personal Narrative: Lake Clarity
I am terrified of water. Not the crystal clear water in swimming pools or bathtubs, but the dark, murky water you find in ponds and swimming holes. Where you struggle to see even a few inches below the surface, and anything could be lurking just outside of your field of vision.
This fear is not unfounded. A couple years ago I went on a camping trip with my family. The place we went to was called Lake Clarity, however it was anything but. At the entrence to the park my mother stopped to ask a ranger for directions.
"Oh, y'all are going to Lake Clarity?" he asked with a smile.
"Well, you best be careful. Some folks say that a long time ago a person drowned in that lake, and that sometimes the ghost get's lonely." he added.
I didn't actually

I looked around. It was a peaceful day. The sun beat down on my exposed neck through gaps in the trees, and the leaves rustled lightly in the breeze. I closed my eyes for a second to admire the subtle sounds and smells of nature.
Suddenly he was gone.
A small ripple ran across the surface of the water where he had been. I called out his name, hoping that he had just swam underwater for a second. There wasn't a response. I swam out to where he was, feeling slimy strips of sea weed brush against and entangle my feet as I cut through the water as fast as I could.
The last of the ripples had just dissipated when I got to the spot he had disappeared. I took a gulp of air and dove under the brownish surface. I tried to open my eyes, but the filthy water stung and I couldn't see more than an inch in front of me. I felt around blindly and frantically.
Something cold wrap around my ankle, my heart skipped a beat I struggled violently, kicking and flailing, desperatly trying to break through the surface. It's grip only tightened. My thoughts became blurred, and my muscles became too weak to fight the icy tendril's

As a reaction I lunged for it and I lost my balance and before I knew it, I was in the water. I cried out hoping someone would hear me and I tried to swim after the racing yacht but after I had swam about fifty feet, I began to realize there was no way I was going to catch up to it. I stopped in the water and I heard a high screaming sound, the sound of an animal in an extremity of anguish and terror. I didn’t even recognize the animal.…

We were ready. Paddles in hand, canoe by our side, personal floatation devices, knee pads, and cameras. The afternoon sun shined on the lake, reflecting it across the calm waters. Crowds of people were enjoying their Sunday afternoon on North Beach at Devil’s Lake State Park. Young children stumbled on the moist sand and shallow waters as they tried to catch tadpoles with their small buckets. Soothing, a gentle breeze passed by as we walked towards the edge of Devil’s Lake. Marveling at the majestic mountain of cedars around the lake and smelling the damp sand, my dad, little sister, and I were all set to take on our first wilderness inquiry; canoeing across a lake. It was safe to say that we were in for an exciting adventure…

When I took a careful look at the lake, it looked similar to a heart shape; just one side was slightly bigger. The colour of the water was like an innocent girl's eyes, so pure. It was a dark turquoise and if you looked carefully you could see the luminous scales of various fish. Every now and then a heard of teeny tiny jump fish would be racing across the glowing surface of the lake as if they were being chased by the police.…

The Veronica was riding high on the desert dunes of the sea, the ship jumped off waves and landed hard on the water. Being the captain, I shouted orders to keep the ship level, but we all knew it was too late. The storm had triumphed over us. Waves became harder and more frequent. Suddenly, we heard a loud creak. The hull had been breached by a huge rock and water was now flooding the hull. Driven by panic and taken by madness, the men jumped to save their lives. I saw my beautiful Veronica sink slowly, but then, even I had no choice but to take the leap. Debris tumbled out from the boat. Loud shrieks came out from the depths of the men’s lungs, lifeless bodies floated around me. It was a horrible sight. I don’t remember what happened next, but I must have been hit. Then, I found myself here, on this island, my face buried in the sand, with all the washed up belongings. The next day, while fishing for food, I injured myself on a rock by the sea, and a memory came to me and it made me realise that there was no one to help me here on the island.…

The tide was going out at the bay and the water where we were walking was ankle deep. Miniature waves splashed our legs and the choppiness of the water made it difficult to see our feet. We were in her back yard, in the little two foot pool. I started to fall asleep while in the water, and ended up under water, as it filled my lungs. The water was warm, which had surprise me. It was sunny, though, so it kind of made sense. I hardly felt the water as I slowly drifted to my death while I breathed in more and more water, making it incapable of pushing myself above water. My eyes were wide as I heard Maisie screaming for me to wake up. I guess she half expected me to shoot up out of the water, breathing like I had just ran a marathon. But I didn’t. Instead, I lay there, sunken into the water, watching the beautiful rays of light fade to black. Only then did he pull me out of the water. I didn’t know who he was, because I didn’t see his face, but he rescued me.…

The hot sand stung their bare feet with each step they drew closer to the sea. They walked until they found the cool refuge of the wet ground before it and lifted their eyes. The sea rose in front of them, vast and welcoming. Its surface glittered, stretching as far as the eye could see, and waves after waves raced and stumbled and slid, foaming, trying to reach their tiny feet. "Come on!" shouted a boy behind them. "Why are you just standing there?" They turned their heads and saw him sprinting towards them, passing them and charging into the water with a diving finale. He disappeared from sight and seconds later he erupted out of the sea triumphantly, bombarding their warm bodies with wet spikes. "Come on! The water is so warm!" he said and skimmed the water surface with his palm, sending more spikes towards them. The two kids backed off to the burning sand. "Leave your brothers alone, Tom!" a man's voice shouted from behind. He was sitting on a beach chair under a yellow-blue umbrella, and besides him a woman who was lying on a towel outside the shade. Tom dove into the water and swam away, and the two boys felt safe enough to approach the sea, just outside the waves' reach. "You first," said the rounded boy, Ricky. "Okay," replied the smaller kid, Eddy. He took a deep breath and ran into the water with a battle cry. After few steps his slender feet stumbled and lost balance, and he fell. Instinctively he closed his eyes before the water engulfed him in its warm embrace and all outside noise was silenced by the quiet murmur of the sea. It whispered calmly in his ear and carried him gently. But his instincts called again and he started kicking and punching underwater, rising up with the bubbles of air that escaped and went to reunite with the air above. His head emerged, his blond hair covering his eyes, and he gasped for breath. "It's warm," Ricky said besides him, who was advancing step by step. He stopped waist-deep in the water and sat down so his…

We took off down a path covered softly with dark green moss and tiny pink flowers. Off to the side of the path were endless trees and plants all bunched together to make one beautiful landscape. After a while, we reached a sparkling, narrow river. It was about nine feet deep and nearly two feet deep. The path went right alongside the water. Down the river, we came to a deep water hole where all the fish danced in the swirling currents. I noticed the water bank was beginning to flow a little faster now, and I could hear the steady, rushing noise of the water falling over the cliffs that were ahead of us. We walked to the edge to look over the crystal clear lagoon below us. The waterfalls dropped about thirty feet down before it met the pool below. At the sides of the beautiful waterfall were ferns, other green plants, and rocks glistening in the sun. Vines weaved their way down from the trees that towered from the bright sky above us. We decided to climb down towards the water pool.…
