This fear is not unfounded. A couple years ago I went on a camping trip with my family. The place we went to was called Lake Clarity, however it was anything but. At the entrence to the park my mother stopped to ask a ranger for directions.
"Oh, y'all are going to Lake Clarity?" he asked with a smile.
"Well, you best be careful. Some folks say that a long time ago a person drowned in that lake, and that sometimes the ghost get's lonely." he added.

I looked around. It was a peaceful day. The sun beat down on my exposed neck through gaps in the trees, and the leaves rustled lightly in the breeze. I closed my eyes for a second to admire the subtle sounds and smells of nature.
Suddenly he was gone.
A small ripple ran across the surface of the water where he had been. I called out his name, hoping that he had just swam underwater for a second. There wasn't a response. I swam out to where he was, feeling slimy strips of sea weed brush against and entangle my feet as I cut through the water as fast as I could.
The last of the ripples had just dissipated when I got to the spot he had disappeared. I took a gulp of air and dove under the brownish surface. I tried to open my eyes, but the filthy water stung and I couldn't see more than an inch in front of me. I felt around blindly and frantically.
Something cold wrap around my ankle, my heart skipped a beat I struggled violently, kicking and flailing, desperatly trying to break through the surface. It's grip only tightened. My thoughts became blurred, and my muscles became too weak to fight the icy tendril's
