Screams of excruciating pain interrupted my slumber. Springing up from my sleeping bag, I looked in the direction where I heard the continued sounds of agony, broken bones, and ripping flesh. Quickly scanning the gym with my eyes, I saw that five of Kristine’s survivors became runners. In the bleachers, three of runners dugged their teeths into the survivor’s necks, faces, shoulders, who were lying peacefully and unexpected in their sleeping bags. In the middle of the gym’s basketball court, two more runners’ yanked meat and muscles from survivor’s faces, as the survivors attempted to fight back, however their attempts were useless, the runner’s strength over powered theirs. As one runner, in the middle of the gym, swallowed a survivor’s nose,…

How does a positive attitude help avoid conflict? According to Remez Sasson,”It brings optimism into your life, and makes it easier to avoid worries and negative thinking… you see the bright side of life” (Sasson). This shows that seeing the bright side of life will make all worries and negativity dissipate during tough challenges. During World War 2, many people used the method of positivity to endure the misery. From Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank tries to stay positive while in hiding. It was exceedingly challenging getting around without getting captured by the Nazi. Another novel is Dear Miss Breed: True Stories of the Incarceration During World War ll and a Librarian Who Made a Difference from Joanne Oppenheim. One of the many letters is from Louise Ogawa, and she, like all the other Japanese, had to go to an internment camp. To distance herself from the hardships, she tried to stay positive and think of the positive. Having a positive attitude is the best way to respond to conflict, especially during horrendous situations like World War 2.…

What is a legacy? Lin Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton described it as “planting seeds in a garden you never get to see”. In a similar way, the Broadway musical, In The Heights, sings about continuing what is passed down to you because one day it may be gone. One song in particular titled, “Paciencia y Fe” inspires me to work as hard as I can just like Abuela Claudia did when she immigrated from Cuba. The Broadway hits’ harmonies and melodies have instilled in me a sense of hope for the future, where I can continue a family legacy.…

"We admire people to the extent that we cannot explain what they do, and the word admire then means marvel at." This quote by B. F. Skinner shows exactly how I idolize certain people. I admire those who can make me realize who I am, who understand where I stand on and who is not afraid to say what is on their minds. One incredible individual, who I have met recently, changed the way I looked at the world. Ms. Lena Parks has a different air around her that I do not find most in others. I applaud her for the discipline she imposed on herself to reach her goal, for her sense of humor, and for her individuality.…

Before I was two years old a circumstance happened which I have never forgotten. It was early in the spring; there had been a little frost in the night, and a light mist still hung over the woods and meadows. I and the other colts were feeding at the lower part of the field when we heard, quite in the distance, what sounded like the cry of dogs. The oldest of the colts raised his head, pricked his ears, and said, "There are the hounds!" and immediately cantered off, followed by the rest of us to the upper part of the field, where we could look over the hedge and see several fields beyond. My mother and an old riding horse of our master's were also standing near, and seemed to know all about it.…

I still remember his deep brown eyes that day, almost as if his soul was shining through them. They screamed innocence and confusion as we walked through the doors of the veterinarian's office. He was so ignorant of his own fate, yet he still shook like he uniformly did just as if he was only going in for an annual check up. I was stuck deep in the paradox of wanting him to be set free from all his pain, but selfishly, I wanted him to stay. I yearned for the dog that he once was, but he was too far gone. His heart said yes but his legs and body consistently said no and he suffered everyday in the meanwhile because of it.…
