Personal Narrative-Med School
You had a set schedule for your life: Monday through Thursday from 7am till 3 you where at school either in class or studying that would sometimes bleed out to your weekends when you did not work (or even in work). While working in the hole in the wall bookstore the manager allowed you to study on duty so costumers can feel encouraged to buy more. So while engulfed in your textbook a tall man around your age appeared in front of you.
“Hello, sorry bother you but may you please check if this item is in stock?” the man said in a sweet voice, which forced you to find the face to match such a celestial sound. “it’s a cook book, I mean it pretty old but I figured you may have it.”

I have obtained two jobs working alongside physicians and nurses. The first job consists of transporting patients throughout a large hospital system. Every day is filled with numerous activities as the hospital is a level one trauma center located between suburban and urban areas. I chose to work nights to gain more responsibilities and autonomy. My responsibilities include transporting patients throughout the hospital system. I have learned to communicate with a diverse population and explain my role with regards to care. During night shifts, I was tasked with transporting patients out of the emergency department and into the main hospital. Other roles of my job include collecting, cleaning, and distributing equipment such as IV pumps throughout…

The next part of my journey consists of going to medical school, getting an internship, as well as completing residency afterward. The medical school will last up to 4 years with the internship combined into the last 2 years of being in medical school. Internship and residency combined are usually between 3 to 8 years (How to Become a Physician or Surgeon). All states require physicians and surgeons to be licensed. To qualify for a license, I must graduate from an accredited medical school, complete residency training in a specialty that I choose, and pass written and practical exams. There are many different graduate schools that are really great but the three that I have real interests for are PITT School of Medicine, Oregon Health Science…

The journey to medical school has by no means been an effortless one. Choosing the non-traditional route to complete my studies has not only equipped me with the maturity necessary to excel in medical school, but also the knowledge required to overcome the challenges I may encounter during my journey. Upon completing my undergraduate studies at FSU, I subsequently went on to complete additional post baccalaureate science courses at both Miami Dade College and Florida International University. Also, I have recently completed my Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Barry University. During my undergraduate and graduate years, I maintained full time employment, which has taught me the art of time management; a trait I believe will be essential to my success while in…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

My educational goals can be said to be broken down into three parts that are really the means to my ends which is the fourth and most important goal. First, Im working on getting good grades in every class, I want to work on having and maintaining a high competitive GPA. When I was thinking about writing this journal post a particular experiences came into my head. I pushed it aside for the fact that it didn't fit the criteria for this journal. However, after struggling trying with writer's block, I gave in to my original thought. The experience I am going to be talking about doesn't fit the criteria of being a patient/nurse interaction because I wasn't with a “patient” or in a clinical setting.…

My mom taught me to live by the Golden Rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I have lived by this rule all my life. I have never had a problem getting along with others and treating them with respect until I started my nursing career as an LPN. I started working at the local hospital, working night shift. I really enjoyed going into work, helping the patients with their needs. I enjoyed visiting with them and finding out what would make their stay better. Then one day the supervising nurse in charge of the floor took me aside and told me to stop visiting with the patients. I was thinking to myself okay there has got to be a good reason behind this. She told me the patients need their sleep and they don’t need me to visit with them and keep them awake.…
