When I was elected as Treasurer for my BPA chapter at my high school, I thought to find a way to help make the business classes more entertaining and more helpful for the real world. After weeks of research, I stumbled across the H&R Block Budget Challenge, and brought the idea up to the school. After approval from the business teachers and the principal of our school, we introduced the activity to our business classes, with many successful results. We have done this challenge for two years now, and hundreds of kids in our school have participated in the activity, while still learning about personal finance skills necessary for their

Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

I once had a crazy college professor who made us write a paper and put music to it. I wrote about how my wife was like my new kitchen trash can and played chords on my piano to enhance the words I spoke. My teacher liked it. I liked doing it. And, I think my wife still likes me after doing it too. The assignment, in both the way it was given and how I went about doing it, reflects two ways that embody my personal educational philosophy.…

My metamorphosis came about when I entered high school. My English teacher assigned a project in which we began mapping out our high school experiences so that they attract the attention of our desired colleges. After class, I opened up to her about how I did not have any direction in life. I had no clue what I wished to be or even why I was going to school. To my surprise, she didn’t ridicule me. She simply asked me to recall a time that inspired me when I was a child. It could be anything from a superhero movie to the first time I learned about the planetary system. Out of habit, I claimed that I was never inspired by anything. She then retorted that if that were the truth, why was I still being driven to exist. Without purpose, creatures lose the will to carry on so something had to have incited my passion to keep me active for all these years. To this day I am amazed by how a simple phrase could move…

My high school graduating class consisted of 66 students, so obviously everyone knew everyone and unfortunately everyone’s business. When I was a junior, a well-known and liked senior boy had a very public breakup with his girlfriend of 3 years. They had met as freshmen and were expected to marry after finishing school. The next day he drove his car at what police estimated in excess of 100 miles per hour into a concrete railroad bridge that crossed the main road out of town. After that, the bridge became known as Burkett’s bridge and I was never able to drive through it without getting a chill and goosebumps on my arms. It’s been over 40 years since high school, and it is amazing how often I still think of Bobby and his…

The biggest commitment that I have ever made so far was when I was in the high school, that commitment was challenging and difficult for me. It was graduating from the high school a high grades. Why it was challenging and difficult was because before that commitment I was the laziest person in my family, I didn't care about school and believed that getting high grades in school wouldn't change my life as long as I moved from level to the next but my intuition was wrong. My father tried to change my perspective, he had done many thing to me by enrolling me with a tutor, talking to my instructors in school to help me. However, all that things didn't work. He didn't see any change. As a result, he tried to convince me that affect our family’s…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…

I was the kind of guy who always strove in order to get the highest grades but yet hadn’t decided what to do in the future. I wasn’t worried, I knew someday I would find something in what I was good at. I got to live with that thought for some time until I got to attend middle school, where I stopped worrying about my grades and managed only to pass the subjects. I spent most of my time sleeping due to the frustration of not knowing what to do in the future. Most of my middle school experience was tasteless. I hadn’t friends at all, and teachers used to discourage their students about their future. “You're not going to college, you’ll not be able to do it because you’re poor” used to say, Mrs. Vazquez, the math teacher who instead of giving her class, talked on how much his son had accomplished in college and how we would not be able to attend. That was about to change.…

Throughout history, women have been notably resilient and powerful in overcoming all forms of inequity. As the population exponentially grows, women make up almost half of the workforce, they are the sole or co-breadwinner in American families, and they receive more college degrees than men. Yet, women continue to earn significantly less than men in their careers. The wage gap is the ratio earnings of women and men within the economy as a whole. Sociologists have studied that the persistence of the wage gap over time plays in the role of discrimination. Is there discrimination within the workplace? An estimate of 38% wage gap still remains unexplained when factors reasonably thought to affect the gap are controlled for: hiring, firing, promotions,…

In first grade, it was my first year in public school so I didn’t have as much friends as the the people that were in kindergarten last year. When I walked into the room, both of my parents on each of my side they introduced to my teacher then I sat in the empty seat. The person assigned to sit next was a girl named Chloe. At first sight, I mesmerized by the amount of silly bands she had. At that moment I knew I had to be her friend.…
