Throughout history, women have been notably resilient and powerful in overcoming all forms of inequity. As the population exponentially grows, women make up almost half of the workforce, they are the sole or co-breadwinner in American families, and they receive more college degrees than men. Yet, women continue to earn significantly less than men in their careers. The wage gap is the ratio earnings of women and men within the economy as a whole. Sociologists have studied that the persistence of the wage gap over time plays in the role of discrimination. Is there discrimination within the workplace?     Approximately 70% of employer’s expenses consist of labor costs. An employer that hires only females can save 20 cent per dollar compared to one that only hires men. Since a female worker saves the company 20 cents per dollar, she is performing equally to a man – to a lower cost. Since marginal benefit versus marginal cost for women is 20 cents higher than the ratio of men, there should be a clear incentive for hiring women. There has been a major discussion over the passed years about the questions around whether women and minorities are being wage-discriminated on the basis of their sex/ethnicity. This paper will elaborate on the part of women. In the 1950’s one third of the US workforce was made out of women compared to today where two thirds are females.     Hispanic women’s salaries show the largest gap, at 54 percent of white men’s earnings. Black women’s salaries stand at 64 percent of white men’s earnings.     According to studies written in an article by Sarah Jane Glynn the average white women only make 77% of the money the average white man makes, for women of minorities the gap is even larger (Glynn, 2012). Glynn also noted that the wage gap significantly increased among mothers that were divorced (Glynn, 2012).
